Fish-like odor from a PF cake
    #1520476 - 05/04/03 09:09 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hello there,

Well, I went somewhere where a PF cake was sitting in a small terrarium made with a plastic coke 2L bottle and when the guy fanned the terrarium, he noticed an intense fish-like odor coming from the terrarium.

The cake itself seems to be healthy and doesn't seem to be contaminated. It was birthed 2 days ago after being dunked for 12 hours in tap water.

Anybody saw something like that? it doesn't look normal to me...

thanks!

I'm sorry but that's probably from bacterial contamination.

Yes, most probably bacterial contamination like zeronio said.
The bad thing about dunking in tap water is that it isn't ver well desinfected. Next time dunk it in a h202:h20 solution to make it safer.

I always dunked in tap water and had 0 problems. I would boil the tap water on the stove first tho and let it cool.

The cake is destroyed now.  This is not the first time I dunk a cake and I never had problems before.  This cake wasn't fully colonized.  It was stuck at 95% since many weeks.  I knew it was a bit risky to dunk it in tap cuz of that but since it was quite dry, I just tried and failed.

Thanks for the cue MAIA about H202/H20.  I was with the impression that H202 could hurt the cake but since you say it's ok, I'm pretty sure your opinion worths a lot more than mine  .

Of course, distilled or source water would be better and easy to do.

thanks!!

I fill bottles with water used for PCing the substrate and use it later for dunking cakes .
I believe is good to use boiled water for killing some possible existing kind of bacteria.
My advice is due to different water purity levels having something to do with his problem.
For an instance, i don't used tap water if the bacterial level is peaking its limits and normally it happens when it rains a lot and then heats up a little. I do this because i have access to online data about the water purity level on my region. I just consider this as a possibility and try to diminish it, adding h2o2 to water just seems a good way to "clean" the water and treat a possible infection at the same time.
