Alex Grey and his books
    #1521746 - 05/05/03 02:00 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I've been wanting to buy an Alex Grey book for a while now but I can't find them anywhere (all out of stock). I'm thinking of buying through Amazon but I can't decide which one to get since I can't actually flip through the pages and check 'em out.

Which book in your opinion should I get?

Transfigurations
The Sacred Mirrors
Mission of Art
The Visionary Artist: Creative Visualization with Alex Grey

All of them got 5 stars on Amazon.com

I have Transfigurations and it is beautiful. There are about 170 pages, and has a huge range of art and discussions, etc.  It has a chapter about the sacred mirrors, tho no more. It's also hardback.
I recommend this, because I love his newer art a little bit more than older stuff. There is a lot about birth and life in this, as well as his history as an artist, performer, crazy half-shaved-head-man-running-around-the-north-pole guy.
I've looked thru Sacred Mirrors, which is cool because it has many details about the chapel and stuff. But I can't say much more about it, cuz i don't own it.

I have both Transfigurations and The Sacred Mirrors.  I recommend getting all of them however Transfigurations has more material and covers some of the stuff The Sacred mirrors does.  I suggest Transfigurations as your first book.  The pictures are awe inspiring along with the text.  I actually went to one of his exhibits in NYC and got to meet Alex Grey and he explained all of his paintings and answered any questions one might have about his work or his opinions on different spiritual topics.  It was great.  Good luck with your book, I think you'll enjoy all of them and buying any of them is a wise investment.

You can't go wrong with any of them. But I'll have to say Transfiguration and if they're out of stock and if you're a true fan, do the man a favor and support him by buying off of his site (alexgrey.com). He'll not only appreciate it but he'll also autograph for yyou.
