Help with inactive ID
    #1519971 - 05/04/03 05:27 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

These mushrooms have been visiting my compost pile.I may have edibles in my compost pile soon and wouldn't want any poisonous species to pop up in between my edibles. The compost is made of dried grass clippings, cow manure, and some sawdust(oak). The caps get as large as 6inches,the stem is about 4 to 6 inches. The spore print color is orange.I never see any veil or remnants. They have a normal mushroom smell. The temps are in the 80's to 60's.
I know some of you guys are real geniuses when it comes to mushrooms, appreciate the help.

I'm going to go slightly out on a limb and guess that the spore print is actually more of a salmon pink.

Those look like Pluteus cervinus. They are a bit early, so perhaps you are in the southern part of the US (you didn't say).

Here is a list of features you can use to verify the ID (taken from Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America by David W Fischer and Alan E Bessette):

1. Cap grayish brown to dark brown.
2. Gills white to pinkish, free from stalk.
3. No veil, ring, or volva present.
4. No greenish or bluish stains on base of stalk.
5. Found on well-decayed wood.
6. Spore print salmon pink.

Only one species in the genus Pluteus would be "poisonous" - Pluteus salicinus which is active and would fail #4 above but match all the others.

Given a salmon pink spore print color (make sure you use something like sunlight to verify color - incandescent light is yellowish and will make the color look wrong), the list of features above will verify that you have a Pluteus. All of them (except P. salicinus) are considered edible.

Tricholomopsis platyphylla is also very similar, but it would have a white spore print and attached gills. They are edible, but some people get sick eating them, so if that's what they are, try a small amount the first time to make sure you don't get as sick if you're sensitive to them. If you're sensitive they cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Poisonous Entolomas could appear similar, but they would be smaller and have attached gills.

Please verify the features I listed above and let us know. If they match, then you've already got edible mushrooms growing form your compost heap.

Hope that was helpful.

Happy mushrooming!

Toxicman, damn, you're good.Yes they identify exactly with 1-6.The spore color is more of a salmon pink actually.I was curious what local species of mushrooms would inhabit the compost pile if I kept it moist, it was kind of a "if you build it,they will come".
I plan on making other compost piles of different substrate to see what other wild species will come,it's a rather interesting experiment.
Really appreciate the ID,you nailed it.

There are actually 6 species of Plutues with psilocine/psilocybine in them.

Howeve, P. cervinius is not one of those psychoactive speciews.
