Ethno garden correction - taz poppies
    #1521450 - 05/05/03 11:02 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

As it turns out the tas poppies from teh shops are now not very useful for a poppy garden - though they are useful in breeding
Glaxo and the tasmanian researchers isolated a mutant with a defective gene in the conversion pathway from thebaine to codeine
So instead of producing morphine and codeine , it gets stalled at thebaine. Thebaine is toxic but it is the starting point for oxycodone in the lab

60% of tasmanias poppies are of this variety now and the seed all gets mixed in together and sold off for bread rolls n such

So dont use Australian poppy seed unless the tas strain comes from pre mid nineties seeds - unless of course you want to backcross to up the potency of other strains - the working gene of the other parent will restore codeine and morphine pructive capacity to the hybrids and then youll need to select from their progeny to weed out the recessives

here is a tas X Double pink paeony hybrid - not that single is dominant - ideally youd want to have a morphine producing frilly 'pretty poppy' with variable colours in the population - no more suspiscion - just compliments

and the parent paeony

Sorry no tas pics but theyre boring - large plants multi tillered with white to mauve single flowers and the inside 'spots'  purple.
