Flow hood air speed after construction
    #1518026 - 05/03/03 05:54 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all. I just built a laminar flow hood using a 34"x24"x6" 99.99% hepa filter. The box is a big sturdy 3/4" thick wooden box 24" deep.

I put a Dayton 4C831 blower on the top of the box and have it mounted and sealed well. The blower is 1/2 HP and puts out 1092 CFM at .8". The rating for the hepa is just below this.

This is the same blower that Stamets sells on www.fungi.com, the 1/2 hp blower for over $400 bucks. I got it for much less but its his "universal blower."

Ok, so my problem is, what should it feel like standing in front of a flow hood? How much air should be moving out? I get very little air flow coming out of this hood. It is coming out, but realy lightly, just a light light breeze. Barely perceptable 2 feet away from it.

I lit some incense, and stuck it in front of the hood and the air moves away at a smooth laminar flow, until about 24" or a little more in front of it. Is this right? I always thought it would be much more then that, like a soft wind blowing on you. I cannot keep a match lit right in front of it (say 1 foot away) so is that enough? I'm just a little worried, I got all the specs right, at least from my research, but I have never stood in front of a hood before. That blower put out so much air before I connected it, it was amazing. It would spin on the floor if I let it (it weighs about 30 pounds!!).

I will try testing it in a day or so by exposing some sterile agar to it at various locations and seeing what happens. Just wondering if anybody out there had any experience with these...

thanks!!!

I had the same dilemma when I built mine. I thought it was going to blow my petris away  and I was very disappointed when it didn't. However I had great results ever since.
The air flow speed should be 0.5 m/s. When you think about it that's not so much. I will test at what distance it blows out a match and let you know.

blowers would be a difficult thing to make unless you have some mechanical and electrical engineering background..

See my post in Advanced (just posted it thanks to your query!) - use your A/C!!

My blows out a match about 1 foot away. I'm not sure if that's enough, but it works very good for me. Almost 0 contamns since I use it.
HEPA H13 class (99.97% at 0.3 ?m) 610x457x78mm & blower cost me about 250$.

I have the same ones that TLG sells....they are good, very effective in the design because of the shielding, but unless he changed the actual blower assy inside it will be very low air flow, I have one with both the original and a replacemen blower and both work, the new blower model has a higher pressure but thats because I had chosen a 200cfm fan as opposed to the original 76cfm model...

Building you own is cheaper and more rewarding as long as you have the time and tools....believe me...I've spent almost $80k on tools in the last 4 years....and the only thing I have not made yet is a flow hood....my plans after I get my warehouse and lab built is to do just that.... 2 1/2x5 feet ULPA model...

Thanks guys, yeah sounds like mine is working properly then. 0.5m/sec is pretty slow air movement. Mine blows out a match at 1', 2' and almost at 3' but not quite. Its almost imperceptible yet smoke flys steadily away from the face of the hepa at a steady rate.

I'll try an agar exposure tonight and see how that goes. I wasn't sure whether I should be stoked on having a flow hood now or bummed that I messed it up somehow :-)

Here's a link to a company that sells many dayton blowers. You can get them at Graingers for cheaper (about 20% or so) but I wasn't able to get grainger to sell to me. But these are much cheaper then what Stamets sells. Use Grainger to get the specs on the blowers then check of these guys sell the same one if you need to.

Man I've been meaning to build my flowhood for a long time now. I bought the 24"x18" filter from fungi perfecti. After going to home depot and having wood cut to my specs twice and having it not match up I got pissed off and said forget it. I also had a hard time figuring out what kind of blower to get. The filter says 429 cfm @ 1" so I guess I need one that puts 429 cfm at 1", but it seems like a lot of the blowers don't have cfm rating, just hp and stuff. If anyone could help me out I'd sure appreiciate it. The filter is 18"x24" and is 5.8" thick. Thanks a lot!!!!

Look at the blowers at www.grainger.com they have a lot with ratings. Just do a search on the main page for blowers.

There's a chart somewhere on these forums called "Matching blower speed with filter".

Do a search for it!

I've looked there a lot before but they must not be called squirrel cage blowers there cuz I never see any. What do they call squirrel cage blowers at Grainger?? Thanks Calicyco!!!

They call them small centrifugal blowers, or furnace blowers. A squirrel cage blower is typically a centrifugal blower of some type. Also check out the www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/dayton_blower.htm link from above. Those are all squirrel cage blowers from Dayton. Look at the part number, and type that in on the search box at grainger. It will bring you to the spec page for that blower.

Stamets also sells them at www.fungi.com, but is quite expensive. You should try to find a blower that matches your spec and then search around for it, sometimes you find them at surplus sites. Also, locally you might be able to get one from a local HVAC supplier. Squirrel cages are used for moving furnace air, and for things like wood burning stoves, so maybe some specialty stores that might cater to that?

Here's a link to grainger:

Open the phone book & look up the numbers of local furnace & repair places.

When they replace a furnace, they remove the old one (which thereis no market for). They are usualy stored out back & when the pile gets high, a scap dealer comes & hauls them off -- for FREE.

My foaf called around & found several places that would give you the squirrel cages fan & motor assembly out of them, if you take them out -- plus talk nice.

In one afternoon my foaf got 5 of them for a 5th of whiskey to the guy behind the desk & a little work, getting them out.
