Shrooms surviving in the cold?
    #15202465 - 10/09/11 09:01 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Alright, guys, I'm planning on doing a shroom grow sometime in the future. In the far south, it is still pretty warm, getting around 80-90 every day. I'm thinking of doing a shroom grow, because I want to experience my first trip sometime soon. Anyways, I planned on colonizing one of those sterilized mycobags, and then using some straw/compost/dirt/manure as my suubstrate, outdoors, since that is the only place I can really grow right now. If I were to fully colonize my shrooms, and say that takes about a month, and then put them outdoors onto the substrate, what are the chances of them surviving the winter months? Would it help If I put them in a box inside a clear rubbermaid, and put towels around the boxes to insulate them? Thanks shroomery, for alwas being here to answer my questions:heart:

the bigger the patch, the better chances for survival.

The temps here where I'm at in the winter get down to about 45-50 CONSISTENTLY. It gets down below that sometimes, but not all of the time. If I were to have some going outdoors just in the ground, would the chances of them surviving in temperatures such as this be slim? Or would I need to find a way for them to become warmer?

Alright. So are you suggesting that they can survive without heat, or that it would be of no good use to do so?

Thank you for your help. I guess I'll have shrooms growing either way, though. Maybe they won't grow now, but they'll eventually pop up as it gets warmer:smile: I'm going to definitely try this, and let this wonderful community know if it works :dancer:

I just read somewhere that cubes can survive from temperatures from 35F to 95F. Does this sound remotely accurate?

If you can colonize inside why not grow some sclrotia?

Nights here down to 40degF...  Days, at best, in low 60s...  and I saw pins just today, outside

Inside temps between 65~72, as of late, where my spawn jars are kept...  Doing just fine.

Considering you can put mycelium in the refrigerator and it grows normally when you take it out I would think it would survive that. I'm not sure about if it got bellow freezing but I've heard it's at least possible for mycelium to survive that as well.

They'll be fine.  In my climate, cubes can't even be grown outdoors, no matter what.  We get frost here about three times per week in June, July, and August.  You'll be OK.

Could you elaborate on what sclerotia is? I've never even heard that term.

And can you use a mycobag for sclerotia?

I don't know all that much about them, just that they grow in the substrate. They are considered truffles I believe? They take a little more time, but yes you can do it all in the bag. Search around for sclerotia grows and the sorts. Sorry I couldn't be of more help my knowledge is limited on them and spend all my time researching cubes at the moment. Goodluck:thumbup:

P.S. you can also fruit cubes in a bag to. Check out invirto grows.

I'm guessing that sclerotia wouldn't need any light?

So could I used an already made mycobag? That already has the grain in it?

Would you guys suggest me growing this sclerotia, or just the outdoor method that I was contemplating on doing earlier? It seems that I could get more mushrooms for less cost if I did that out door method.

I'm curious why you don't want to fruit them indoors. I'm guessing you're trying to be discreet, but there could other ways to achieve that without growing outdoors.
