I have between 100-150 dollars to buy new PC speakers. What's the best brand for output and clarity?

What kind of listening? Car, home theater, computer desk, etc... Best brands are well out of your price range, unfortunately. If you are really wanting to push high wattage, do not skimp on speaker wire. You don't need to get the specialty "monster cables", but avoid the cheap radio shack stuff.

Maybe like m-audio av40s.... Or audioengine 2s.. Though latter may be a little above budget.

Also, try outputting 1Wrms in an average living room through moderately efficient speakers and once you've recovered your hearing somewhat, then review your requirement of having 'highest watts PC speakers'. Seriously, a pair of decent speakers rated at 30W with a 50W solid state or 10W tube amp is PLENTY loud enough for any domestic setting.
Also, if you want decent sound, then don't go for PC speakers with an integrated amp. Simply pick up a decent amplifier/receiver (can be second hand) and a pair of decent book shelf speakers or small studio monitors. That'll beat the crap out of any PC speaker set money can buy.

Ooops... I totally missed the "PC speakers". My bad.
As koraks (correctly) points out, I would go for quality over wattage. I've always been amazed how loud a few watts can be when done properly. Besides, most products lie about the wattage they produce (damn marketers).
> or small studio monitors
A lot of people don't like studio monitors. They are very good speakers that produce a flat response, which most people are not used to hearing. People are used to hearing "bad" speakers (crossovers, and amps) which boost (muddle) the bass and clip the high end.

I currently use Harmon Kardon Soundsticks with my computer. They aren't the best, but they were in my budget, are simple, are nice looking, and at their price point are better than anything else I found (when I was shopping a few years ago). When I am working with music, I switch over to an Alesis RA150 studio reference amp and a pair of Alesis Monitor One speakers.

I picked up some Bose companion II speakers a couple years back for $100, and they are rather nice. Nothing compared to my new Beatbox, from Beats by Dre (much much less expensive, though ), but they are still nice. Made for computers - they sound best when spaced out such as on the sides of a monitor. http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/digital_music_systems/computer_speakers/companion_2/index.jsp

Thanks Guys, that's a start. Looking on Amazon I came up with 14,000 speakers and was a bit bamboozled.
