I'm a newb, but this tek sounds pretty awesome and really simple. I just have a few questions. So basically, you take your colinized PF Cake out of a jar and put it into a blender with 4 cups of water. You blend that for 2 seconds. How does that not kill the cake, more specifically, how do mushrooms result from a crushed cake, like how do they grow from that - but I'm pretty sure I know the answer to that one, so don't feel like that is the most important question to answer if your only going to answer one. Step 7 on the link, thats a joke right? So you add the blended cake and water to 5lb of corncob animal bedding stuff. Then you drain. How do you drain it, how do you know how much to drain? So once that is done, then you just leave it growing until it fruits or am I missing something? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions...thanks if anyone answers these questions, good luck.

Hey Kesey, how long did you drain the corncob after boiling it, and how long did you drain the excess water after mixing the slurry and corncob together?

Ok man a cake is basicaly mycelium that has formed a mass inside a jar called a cake. You can liquify this and each small little peice will grow bigger and bigger and form a sort of "cake" that will grow mushies just like the one you started with but bigger! Its called casing. Good luck

lol, thanks but he knows this.
what he wanted to know was if he could just case the mix of the pieces of cakes+corncob alone without adding cococoir or ani other things just mix it and wait until it is fully whyte, then let grow the shrooms? would it still be better than the only cake and if it will be a littl better , like how much better?

Wait thats a good point, I assume that this tek is complete as written. You aren't adding anything else to the casing, ie perlite, you are just using your blended cake mush with corncob animal bedding. You let it recolonize for a week or so and then you increase humidty of your chamber, expose it to light (telling it to pin), pick off aborts, and let the fruiting begin, that's it right? The thing I am really confused about is how do you drain it? Like I imagine it pretty watery and slimy, do I use a spahgetti (sterile) sifter, or do I use something with really small holes? How much do you drain, how much did you drain to produce those results. Thanks for any answers guys.

After boiling the corncob the hippie drained it in a strainer for about 30 min,  then he let it Kool for about 6 hours.
After mixing in the slurry, it was very wet!!  He drined the extra slurry out by using a large plate,  and tilting the tub over the sink.

Here's the hippies project today

But hippies not sure if he should use a casing layer (50/50) to the top of the substrate after it completely colonized??  He needs some expert advise on this one!!

So, how moist was the slurry after it was drained? Was it still fairly wet, or only slightly moist? I want to try this tek with a colonized popcorn cake, but the tek's directions are somewhat discrete about the draining. Please give any other info or details you could give me. There wasn't any other info about this tek that I could find.

Also, if I were you, I'd use that colonized slurry to spawn a bulk substrate or use it for casings.

When the hippie drained the corncob after boiling it, it looked really dry or just slightly moist. Today it lookes very moist, and spreding mycelium very quickly.

I meant how moist was the whole slurry, after the cake, water, and corncob was mixed together when you drained it. Thanks

Yeh, the directions seem to imply that you dont need to further case to fruit, but that doesnt seem 100% to me. Let me know what your friend does.

you will definetely appreciate a casing layer- i recommend a verm coco mix at whatever ratio you shoose. it is light, fluffy, and holds a lot of water.

I'd also recommend a casing layer. Very nice looking spawn run!

A casing will allow you to add moisture to the fruiting surface, create a rH buffer, all sorts of good stuff. Without one, I'd bet the cob is going to fruit like one big flat PF cake, and require the conditions for such. Could be wrong, this is new territory for most all of us. Nice job!

Thanks Suntzu, Thats what i thought!! When should the hippie add the casing layer? Should he wait untill it's 100% colonized, case it and then wait about a week utill placing it in his fruiting chamber??

I'm gonna try this too, although I will be using a Pint of Rye grain. I'm not sure if I want to blend it though, I may just break it up like one would for a casing. Please keep up posted with your progress!!!

Yes you want to add a casing layer.

Add a casing layer after it has colonized 100%.
After applying the casing layer...keep an eye on it...put it in the fruiting chamber when the mycelium starts coming up through the casing layer.

Example of when to fruit.

good luck!

Damn man, I've just read over this tek and it looks very easy! I went out to the store today and bought me some corncob. I was just wondering how sterile were you when you did this tek. Did you just follow it as is, or take extra steps to keep it clean?

my pal bought some corncob after seeing this tek too. He spawned probably 10 lbs of corncob with a pint jar of colonized rye. Only thing is, the jar looked 100% colonized, but when it was opened and broken apart, it seems there were many uncolonized grains!!!!

however, he still liquified the mycelium and mixed thoroughly as per the tek. 28 hours later, there are a large number of mycelial colonization points throughout the medium. looks good! but he expects contamination due to <100% colonization of spawn.
