Deadly Galerina, K mutabilis, Honey Mushroom...

This is not an ID request as much as it is a plea for advice to distinguish between these three species. I know that Armillaria mellea has a white spore print, but the honeys i found this year were not looking so fresh and nature does not usually give perfect textbook specimens. Their gills were more brown than white. Maybe older specimens should just be avoided. However, the cap was not smooth and had the black bumps like honeys do. I read about how the caps of G. marginata and K. mutabilis dry differently, but is there a better way of telling them apart?
What draws me to compare these species is their seemingly similar stem. Whitish on top with a small ring and then darkish and scaly or scale-like below the ring.
QUESIONS: What features of G. marginata, A. mellea, and K. Mutabilis are distinctly different? Much thanks. RPV

You don't wanna eat any Armillarias that are so old as to not be distinguishable from Galerina. Too much risk of food poisoning problems. Remember, these things are fungus, they rot easily.
A fresh Armillaria should have no resemblance to a Galerina.
As for Keuneromyces (sp?), too similar in my book to comfortably try. A meal is not worth your life.

Honeys should be easy to tell apart from Deadly Galerina. As you mentioned the spore and gill color, but also yellow cap color, larger size and densely cluster habit at the base of stumps should separate it. The are other species of Armillaria that have brownish caps, but the same rules apply to them. I usually pick my honeys with the cap completely closed. Just cut 'em off...
Distinguishing them from K. mutabilis is a bit more challenging. I recommend that people don't try to eat this mushroom and should be avoided by beginners. The easiest way I know is what you said. The cap will dry from the middle out on K. mutibilis, and from the margin in on G. marginata.

From Wikipedia:
K. mutabilis dries from the centre outwards...G. marginata dries from the edge inwards...the stem below the ring is scaly below the ring in K. mutabilis, but normally fibrously silky in G. marginata...K. mutabilis has a pleasant mushroom smell and mild taste, whereas G. marginata tastes and smells mealy

These differences are so minuscule (in my mind anyway), I'd probably puke out of worry if I ate K. mutabilis.
But then I'm a bit on the conservative side.

My sentiments exactly.

I would never risk eating K mutabilis, I have found some of them and they look way to close to something deadly. I just stick to mushrooms that I know wont kill me, ones that have tells like morels, chanterelles and hedgehogs.
