Anybody here into 3d modeling?

I've been checking out shapeways, and I'm wanting to get some stuff done, but free software for basic modeling stuff is still a bit sketchy.
I just spent the last two days trying to hollow out Stephen Colbert's head to make it cheaper to print, and have accomplished absolutely nothing.
Apparently, hollowing things out is hard or some thang.

I would love to learn but I don't have motivation.
I did a lot of map building on the game "half life 2" and I played around with Google sketch up but nothing artistic really.

Hopefully, I just fixed it. I unchecked "Unify Normals" when I imported the dxf into gmax this time.
Takes forever for gmax to open a 30 MB dxf for some reason.

I know nothing about 3d modeling, but must admit it fascinates me extremely. if I had once choice of a career in the computer field, I would chose to design 3d modeling software or hardware to capture 3d modeling. but I know nothing about 3d modeling or the programs. but I must admit, how they made battlefield 3 is insanely fascinating to me, how they put that together. I wish I designed the hardware that captured those images, and the software that detailed those images. of course it'd be even cooler if I could improve on all that.
sadly, I know not the first thing about 3d modeling. good luck though

I know some about modeling, I actually like it quite a bit, I've always loved photography and having the ability to manipulate light is quite addicting. I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean by 'hollowing' something out. My experience is limited to some 3DS, C4D, Maya.

When you get something 3d printed, it's cheaper if you remove most of the material on the inside, leaving a hollow shell.
Like chocolate Easter bunnies, there's solid bunnies, and hollow bunnies.
In other words, there's another complete surface inside the model a few mm away from the outside surface with normals flipped inside out, and a hole for the material to escape.
