Basalt sand
    #15197529 - 10/08/11 09:32 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

So, being in my volcanic awesome state, I've got access to millions of acres of basalt sand/powder. Been searching for this stuff online, and it's got more an industrial use than anything, though I found acacia sp appreciate the make up, and where I found, the plants trying to grow straight from this "soil" are grey and dead as shit. I'm sure the nitro content is high, but I'm also curious how to get it tested.

If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.

if your basalt sand is straight powdered basalt rock, I'd expect it to be too basic and caustic to plant roots.

from wikipedia:

Basalt generally has a composition of 45-55 wt% SiO2, 2-6 wt% total alkalis, 0.5-2.0 wt% TiO2, 5-14 wt% FeO and 14 wt% or more Al2O3. Contents of CaO are commonly near 10 wt%, those of MgO commonly in the range 5 to 12 wt%.

surely being in sand form, most CaO has been washed off and became Ca(OH)2, but if you ever came across any of both, you know how this behaves with your skin. add that 45-55% of SiO2, a soil that mineral would be good just to improve drainage, mixed with something else.

you'd test pH with litmus paper or any of the test kits sold at stores, or refer to building supplies near your area which already tested the same gravel.

I'm thinking it is way basic. I'm wanting to mix it as a small percent to increase minerals. May have to mix in peat or some kind of acidic soil. I gotta get some litmus for sure anyways. Thanks cc2!
