Should I layer or mix when spawning to bulk?

Should I layer (even layer of sub, even layer of spawn, even layer of sub, etc) or should I just mix all my sub/spawn in the tub and even out the top?
Bonus question: the safety plug on my 23qt mirro has recently popped up but not out, and my pc still pressurizes normally. However my pc has been making more hissing and popping sounds while pressurizing ever since the emergency valve popped up. Pressure has never been above 17 psi and the gauge goes to above 20. safe to use?

I ve both mixed and layered and have had quicker colonization IME with layering. RR suggests that the myc knits together faster and becomes more resistant to contamination because it is closer together. I have found this to be true IME but alot if guys swear by mixing the spawn..... I say that the only way to know what works best for you is to try both and make your own decision. Goodluck man

You should clarify that the small layer on top is bulk substrate material, not grain spawn.
I prefer layering for tray culture, but with filter patch bags, I seal and shake. RR

I agree, I have done both mixing and layering and have also found that layering works a little better/faster. But as always...who really needs another response after RR gave his input?

I Layered my first monotub and it worked great. I mixed these last two, which was quicker and easier. I also had a thin layer of bulk to cover. I think I'm gonna stick with mixing, mainly convenience and speed. But both pinsets have been great and colonization times were no different.
