questions concerning perlite
    #1517940 - 05/03/03 04:57 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

how long does it usually take for perlite too humidify a growing chamber? I have no humidity yet(I'm assuming cause the sides of the storage bin are dry)...its been about 15hours now I'd say....also how often should you add water? I have a 1.5-2 inch layer of perlite with about 1/2 an inch of water

maybe it's not enough water or something? but I don't know how long it takes to humidify. did you put the perlite in a strainer and add water until wet but not soaking (like, squeeze it but not much water comes out)? I think that's how you're supposed to do it but I don't know maybe I'm wrong. someone help me out herre

a stranger was having a problem with humidity in his terrarium. his perlite was about 3 weeks old and not quite 2 inches deep. he bouht new perlite and cleaned the old perlite out, rinsed, then sprawed with lysol, then wiped dry. he added exactly 2 inches perlite (appox. 1 1/4 bags). then he added approximately5 cups water, stirred the perlite to evenly distribute the water in the perlite. he smoothed the perlite out, checked the depth. if its a bit over 2 inches, take out some and scoop into a metal pot (so you can dry the excess later in the oven). then he scrapes a portion of the perlite away from the side of the terrarium so he can see the water table. he actually used a tape measure to make sure the water level was right. make sure you have 2 inches we\t perlite and 1/2 inch water. he set the hydrometer in the terrarium and it read 65% RH, and within 3 hours it read 98% RH. MY suggestion is to be exact as possible.

I don't have a hydrometer...I assumed perlite was gonna do the job fine but I guess I was wrong...so maybe I'll go out and buy one...what brand do you use? where'd you get it and how much?...btw still no consdensation but I added a big plastic clear garbage bag over the top too make sure its sealed..I cut it so about 2 inches hangs over on all sides of the terrarium...it seems to be air tight now...so hopefully that'll do the trick..btw the perlite I used was brand new and really dusty when I first took it out of its packaging(if that means anything)

That sounds fine. If your terrarium is sealed, my friend guarantees the humidity is ok. Condensation on the terrarium walls is an indicator of temperature difference between the inside and outside of the terraium. It is not a good indicator of humidity.

BTW, most hygrometers are notoriously unreliable unless you spend the $ for a good one.

Looking for condensation on the walls of the terrarium is a poor indicator of humidity because it depends on the temperature inside the terrarium versus the temperature outside the terrarium. The windows on a car only steam up when it is cold outside- same thing. You can have good humidity with no condensation.

nope, but if you have condensation everywhere then its a pretty sure sign at ROOM TEMPERATURE that you are good to go!!

P.S.-just buy a 20 dollar digital hygro if u have the cash get that.
P.P.S-add more water to ur perlite, you shouldnt see any white, and dry perlite on the top, but u shouldnt see any water seepin up either-find the medium, perlite loses its wicking ability if its water all the way up to the top.

Perlite works GREAT for me, I have it 5 inches deep in the aqarium with a heater under neath (beneath the GLASS. not on the side as the wet perlite heh)  The heater heats the perlite / water and releases moist humidity into the air. Kicks ass

well the faq I read said the main prob with perlite is when you have 2 much water and it recommended only 1/2 " at the most of water...so now I"m confused...is less water better or more?...also when should I add water?....no one has answered that yet

Your water level should be no higher than 1/4 of the perlite level.

If you have 2" of perlite then use no more than 1/2" of water, for best results.
