Verm substitute?
    #1519403 - 05/04/03 02:34 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I went to go buy some coir at the local pet store and next to that I found a bag of coconut shell pieces. They were around .25-.50" square pieces. I was wondering if this could be a decent substitute for verm as a moisture resevoir and for loosening/aerating(sp) the casing mixture? (Since verm is scarce in some areas.)

Any opinions?

As far as I know, shells cannot hold water. So it cannot be a substitute. Look at the petshop and you will see some kitty soil. Those can be a substitute.. They are made for keeping the pee.. in our case water.

I see trees of green, psylocibe mushrooms too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world

If your interested, I just replied to a thread on using sponge in substrates: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum4&Number=1519144&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

I'm just curious, why on earth would you want a replacement for verm? It has its place and it serves its purpose very well. If its b/c you cannot find it, I would recommend you try a bit harder...call some nurseries or order online....the stuff isnt that heavy.

To answer your Q, I dont know of any good replacements. Did you try to forum search for verm replacements?
