Has anyone used the Hawkins Bigboy?
    #15193454 - 10/07/11 08:40 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I have been searching every where for Pressurecooker so I could start doing WBS.  I couldn't find 1 in the thirft stores, or used for a good price.  I didn't have the cash for the AA so I bought this Hawkins Bigboy 22 liter for $120 at an online site.  It fits 9 quart jars at a time, and cooks @ 15psi.  Does anyone own 1 of these?  and would I just follow the basic PC teks (90 min @15psi)?

How do you know it's 15psi in that thing? Is that what the pressure valve on top is rated for?

I suppose it's too late, but I like ones that have an actual pressure gauge. Here's a pic of mine. It's vintage cast aluminum, and built to last. I looked around online for a solid 2 weeks first. Cost $30

Almost all PC come with a 15psi setting. Mine has 2 weights for 15 and 10 psi, 5 is just the rocker. I have a 8qt presto that has 15 psi only.

of course it does.

the point is you don't have to have the heat up so high to where it's the weight is jiggling furiously.

once it reaches pressure, start dialing down the heat until you get to the point where it barely jiggles and maintains pressure.

Just got done my test run, this thing is very cool.  It is suppose to be much safer than other designs.  The lid doesn't go down & turn to lock on (less wear & tear on the gasket).  You actually  have an oval lid that has to be leaned on an angle, lowered inside the cooker than it seal the lid from the inside out.  I'm happy with the purchase!

Cool, glad to hear man. I've never seen a PC like that before. That's pretty cool.

Neat idea. I do like the extra safety that the lid provides.

My stove only works on HIGH. The other option is OFF.
So when I PC, I have to toggle between OFF/HIGH every couple minutes.
It's a pain, for sure. But everything comes out sterile. I can't say anything about the "correct" jiggle rate.
