Hello everyone. This will be my first season hunting in the PNW, and I am asking for some help. I live in Nevada, so the only hunting I will be able to do is just a quick day trip. The area I have in mind is around Weed, California and the Mt. Shasta area. I am looking specifically for Chanterelles. Can anyone please tell me is this a good area to find Chanterelles? If not, can anyone please tell me where is? I'm not asking for a specific place, just more of a general area where I should go. Thanks for your help!

The comments section of that Seattle Times article gives hunting clues...
I had really good luck finding Chanterelles last week - That on the Peninsula though.

-------------------- Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Yeah it did, almost like honey. I have a shit-ton of cleaning to do though. My wife made chanterelle stroganoff tonight and I am thinking soup tomorrow. I highly recommend the chanterelle stroganoff, delicious!

I'm with ya on that. Anything pasta wise and chants is awesome. I clean with a very soft fingernail brush in a bucket of VERY cold water, then just pour the water around areas that look good later on. The softy fingernail brush is the shit, and I even use this to clean actives (doesn't even tear the pellicle). Congrats man, and remember where those were

I managed to get out on a nice little hunt on Friday. I will tell you all this; for 1 week into October, this is quite a weak mushroom season. What I went out and was finding looked almost exactly like what I was finding in Mid-September a year ago... with that said; there is still some good pickings, you just have to work a little harder...
I am seeing the same thing that was being reported in that Seattle Weekly article; loads and loads of lobsters. Anyone have any theories on why this Lobster season is so plentiful? I had a thought that it could be because of people picking them and spreading them around everywhere? I mean, they are a parasitic mushroom - so it would make sense that they maybe have found a strong niche in this weak mushroom season? Regardless, I found some monsters!

Pretty sure these mushrooms are being parasitized by Lobsters?

Found a nice little patch of Fall Oysters!

Annnnd... Chanterelles! Not as many as I had anticipated, but still a good haul!

The feast!

.... ok, ok...

Now get out and hunt peeps! It's on!!

Okay quick question, does one need to blanch chanterelles before freezing them? I was thinking of cutting them up into smaller pieces and vacuum sealing them, does anyone have experience with keeping chanterelles and if so could you give me some pointers?

Cantharellus subalbidus.

Agaricus sp. Byrain suggested Agaricus campester ( not campestris!)

Sparissa radicata i think.

maynard, i am dehydrating 6 fat trays of whites right now!!
