My favorite LC recipe as far as sugar based LC's go is Light Malt Extract
LC. Add .6 of a gram of LME to 400ML of water in a quart jar. For your
jar lid silicone an injection port and whatman syringe filter into place
as shown below. This allows you to be able to shake your jars which will distribute
the mycelium without getting your filter wet or inviting in contaminates.
PC for 40 minutes at 15 PSI and your good to go.

Here is an LME LC at 10 days from inoculation with a few kernels of colonized
grain spawn. This was done in front of a laminar flow hood. Culture you
are seeing in the picture is Shiitake.

Home made but you can go about getting yourself something similar in a few
different ways.

TheMadSeason sells premade lids I do believe, or you can purchase the syringe
filters and inoculation ports from them and make your own. I highly recommend
this style of lid for LC's.

Those are pretty sick jars.  Do you make the lids by simpley drilling small holes in them and then fitting it with the fittings?

RTV Silicone
Whatman syringe filter
Inoculation port
Drill
Some time

I drill my holes in the plastic lid as needed. Different sized inoculation
ports will call for different sized holes. I then apply a thin layer
of RTV to the backside of the inoculation port and fit it through the
hole I have made in the jar lid. I then add more RTV around the sides
of the port on both the top and bottom. I do the same for the syringe
filter.

Here are some pictures of the process:

I did not, its pretty straight forward tho, as long as you have a nice tight
seal around your components and your metal/plastic jar lid you will be
fine.

Cool I totally dig it.  Why the two holes though?  Is one specifically to inject with and the other to withdraw the LC once mycelium grows.  Please forgive me if this is a stupid question.  I want to strat working with LCs and this seems like it is a great method to do so.  I just want to fully understand whats going on here.

The one hole is used to install your injection port for injecting your spore
solution or withdrawing LC when your mixture is done colonizing. The other
holes is your gas exchange.

A whatman syringe filter allows filtered air to enter the jar while PCing
so that a vacume is not created while pressure cooking. As well the
whatman allows for gas exchange during colonization, and equalized
pressure as you withdraw your solution.

The Whatman syringe filters are rated at .2 micron.

What type of bits do you use to drill your holes?  I always end up cracking some of the plastic lids with the 1/2 bit.  Do you drill from the top down or the bottom side?

U crack it's because when it builds up from the digging process  the chips cool  and then the twist of the bit snaps the material.

on a saw blade you use the negative rake angle and this prevents that  don't know what does translate andel bits

preheat your plastic a little bit to get it warm and drill it  very slowly

I'm a cabinet maker and a carpenter so I can get through pretty much any material

Use sharp bits, be gentle, and don't be afraid to go slow... Put them up side down on a board or something you don't mind drilling into.

Edit: I have no problem with spade bits for smaller then an inch holes, but for big holes fostner or something like that bits are amazing.

Also, the injection port's are a bit over rated IMHO (of corse). A small hole and some silicone works just fine fore me.

Sure, but this is like the GO PRO option for longevity.

To each their own........

Got lots of silicone on hand any way, takes two seconds to make, requires less bit changes, it's cheaper, and holds up almost as well. So due to the facts that it takes less manual labor and it's cheaper. I just assume put a small hole with two dabs of silicone. Done right, it looks very clean.

Not that injector ports aren't nice.... Just don't see the point in going out of your way to get them is all. By all means though, if you like them go for it!
