Of the two which tends to show sizes of colonization faster a BRF cake or an agar dish?

Honestly I have always had pretty slow growth of cubes on agar. I would say its about equal really. Depending on what method you use. Overall I would say its pretty even.

I agree. Cubes seem to colonize pretty slowly on agar. Why do you wanna know?

Because I inoculated some jars and dropped some spores on some agar the other night at the same time. The spores were at least a 3rd generation hand me down and I cant imagine they are the most sterile of prints. I am just wondering which would be more likely to show any signs of growth first.

I always see fast growth on agar no matter what method I use to inoculate (spore, mycelium, pin, etc.)

What kind of agar do you use and what is your definition of fast?

I use this recipe
Potato Dextrose (Yeast-extract) Agar (PD(Y)A) broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml) (You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead) 9 g agar agar 7 grams dextrose( = glucose, or 10 ml honey or corn syrup ) And I'm not really looking for fast for say. I just want to know which one, the jars or the agar might start to show growth first.

You'll see growth in the flat, two dimensional plane of a petri dish days before you'll see it in any other substrate.
Anyone who thinks cubes grow slow on agar isn't using a proper agar recipe such as MEA. They're rocket ship fast. RR

I use Stamet's PDYA recipe (as stated in TMC). Is it no good? I don't have any caramellization issues, if you think that's the problem.

Today I was just turned onto an agar recipe that uses dog food. I was taught it by a "Trusted Cultivator" so I would say it's legit. The recipe calls for 10 grams dry dog food, 10 grams agar, and 500ml water. I just got done PC-ing 6 dishes of dog food agar. I'm going to inoculate them with some Lipa Yai spores once they cool down.
