I use now brand health food agar. Not the same one as that, but it works. Mine says now 100% agar. Mine is like purple, orange and white and says agar agar on it. I mean its probably not ideal, but it was cheap and what was available at the health food store, so fuck it haha.

Hit the search bar and I am sure you can find the reasons why it will not work.
Get yourself 1-2 ounces of agar powder or flakes, health food stores are going to charge a lot more then it is worth, asian markets will be your best bet, they usually charge $1.50-2 per 25G packet of agar.
You will also want a lb of Light Malt Extract powder from a home brew store, I think I spent $5-6 for a lb of it and it has lasted me coming up on over a year and a half.
These two ingredients will make you Malt Extract Agar (MEA), and with a few more supplies you will be well on your way.

Quick search brought me to this information:
Quote:
Jello has been tried dozens of times over the years. You can find the results with a search. It isn't an agar substitute. The mycelium will feed on the gelatin, turning it back to liquid. It will also begin to rot at room temperature, leading to bacterial contamination. I'm not aware of a single success story. Sorry. RR

You will be able to find these items, just get on the phone and call around.
Standard MEA Mix:
500ML water 10 Grams Agar powder 10 Grams LME
This will make enough agar for roughly 15-20 plates depending upon how thick your pours are. You can scale the recipe up or down for more or less agar. If you are using the agar to make slants I suggest cutting the LME in half. Also if you are isolating for rhizomorphic growth cut the LME down as well.

I don't mind paying a little more for 2oz from the health food store, because the convenience makes it worth it. A 1.2 mile drive and 4 bucks is worth it too me. If nine-10 grams make up 20 trays, that's something like 100+ trays for 3-6 bucks. For me that isn't much.

The LME acts as nutrition for your mycelium, so yes you need it or something along the same lines.
There are many different types of agar you can make, MEA just happens to be the easiest IMO. PDYA, PDA, do a search for fastfreds media cookbook.

Go to the bar up top and go to agar and culture storage. There is a page that lists a lot of different recipes. The one I use doesn't call for malt extract, I use agar, a sugar, and cornmeal. Check it out and see which one best suits the supplies you have on hand.

I use this recipe also but i add 1 gram of yeast per 500ml water for extra nutrition
And i must pour my plates thick because i double the recipe and only pour 20 plates.. heheh

I see you know what you're talking about. I personally prefer PDYA, but that's just me.
And as already said, you can add yeast if you wish..

Iv played with MEA, and MEPA(Peptone). I have been meaning to give PDA and PDYA a try, perhaps the next time I make plates.

I must add that I buy pre-made PDA though (I just add some yeast). I get it at a fairly good price. Boiling those potatos is just such a PITA...
