Quote:

Harvard University chemist Adam Cohen and his team have developed a machine that lets them hold a single molecule in water, at room temperature. The molecule is 1 nanometer in size, or about 3 to 5 atoms wide. This new technology, called the Anti-Brownian Electrokinetic (ABEL) trap enables them to grab any molecule that can be fluorescently labeled and study its properties.

By studying single molecules one at a time, scientists can watch the trajectories of each molecule. This allows for detailed assessments about what influences the reactions of individual molecules. This technique promises to offer fundamentally new insights into the workings of the molecules of which we are made.

The ABEL trap uses a laser tracking system to follow random movements of the molecule, and then applies electrical kicks to the molecule to suppress this movement--often referred to as Brownian motion. Relative to earlier technologies, the device offers an 800-fold improvement in the minimum size particle that can be trapped. With support from NSF, the Cohen Lab continues its work on developing new physical tools for studying molecules and cells. Their research combines nanofabrication, optics, electronics and biochemistry to study the dynamics of biological systems in unexplored regimes of time and space.

only mushroom/drug related news here

move this to the science forum maybe?

This is incredibly cool!!!

"Their research combines nanofabrication, optics, electronics and biochemistry to study the dynamics of biological systems in unexplored regimes of time and space."

We continue to approach the integration of biology and technology....

organic computers

This thread was moved from Shroomery News Service.

Reason:
Very interesting, but better suited to Science and Technology.
