The famous suffer like the rest of us

To be perfectly honest I was not affected by Steve Job's death at all.
Then today my sister told me that a member of our NA group had died.
This one affected me a lot more... it's really crazy.. this is the first time I've actually been moved by someone's death. It's very surreal.
But I understand why people are sad about Steve Job's death now -
He is proof that:
No matter how many lives you reach, no matter how powerful you become, no matter how much you are loved by your fellow man, no matter how humble you are, caring, sensitive...
YOU ARE GOING TO DIE! Our fragility is infinite! The saddest part is that we are doomed from the day we were born. Everyone will suffer the same fate. Everything... you ever knew.. every memory.. every hope... every song that you sing so fucking passionately into the night.. it all goes into the void.
But we have these shields... we need them. Death is ineffably terrifying.. beyond imagination.
I was thinking about Eminem. I love Eminem, I love the work he's done, how he lives his life, he is an idol to me. But as I was listening to one of his songs where he talks about having the whole world in his hand and "this is the slim shady mecca" it's so beautiful and sweet and ironic and tragic because these lives we live on this planet. this whole fucking illusion.. it all goes into the void.

True dat bro.
That's why I take very little seriously anymore. I try to take pleasure in the moment and play as much as possible and try and let go every time I want to hang on. The Buddhist's were smart about that shit. Meditate around corpses and keep death and impermanence in mind at all times. I'm getting pretty good at it now myself.

So you have struck some kind of balance?
Do you find that when you take things less seriousy - the serious things become even more serious?

To be honest, I was moved by Jobs death because of two things:
1. I knew him (and Wozniak)and was there in the halcyon days of Silicon Valley and was friends and acquaintances with many of the early Apple engineers.
2. I am the same age as Jobs. Reminder of mortality and all that.

The universe is not a game or a distraction. Is discernment of truth and falsehood ever a game?

Yes it is. Lots of games are based on this in fact.

Woe is you; life is suffering because it ends.
Why not come up with a new outlook, instead of rehashing the same tired nihilist angle? What is "the void" anyway?

There's nothing wrong with his POV, it's as honest and real as yours. If it's sad and he can live with that then more power to him imo. At least he's facing what he sees. Often that's a first real step in coming to better (more enjoyable) points of view. More honest and whole imo.

Selfish pricks
Public expression of grief egocentrism
LONDON - People who publicly mourn for deceased celebrities that they have never met are just looking out to feel better for themselves and for entertainment purposes. That is the conclusion of a study by the independent British research Civitas.
Massive displays of mourning, such as at the death of Princess Diana or in the Netherlands after the murder of Pim Fortuyn, according to the survey is not a sign of great compassion in society but of very self-centeredness.
"All those flowers and demonstrations to help the poor dead or not, but are rather meant to show others what a compassionate person you yourself are," said one of the authors of the study in the Guardian on Monday.

I'm not buying it. I believe people get attached to celebrities and when they die it is similar to a friend or family dying.

Oh, come on. Your entire post screamed that everything in life is worthless.
And you never answered my question. What is "the void"?

lol... you are projecting, dude. my post is exactly the opposite - we are going to die, and it's all beautiful and tragic at the same time. death gives our lives meaning. life is the most worthwhile thing ever.
the void is simply a way of saying Nothingness

Nothingness isn't a place stuff can go into.

There isn't one. But that doesn't make the concept of "nothingness" or "the void" any more valid. It's a contradiction in terms.
