Vermiculite as barrier on rye grain jars

I believe I read this a couple of years ago but haven't seen it recently. Do you guys think this will work well?
Pace tinfoil over the opening of jar and push it into the jar to form a cup shape.
Fill this with vermiculite.
Put the lids on over the cup of vermiculite. The threads of the jar will be covered with foil but the lid will still screw on over it.
Sterilize the jars.
You can now inoculate through the hole in the lid, and through the vermiculite layer rupturing the foil. If you are not careful to create a small puncture hole, some vermiculite will drop onto the grain.
This creates a pf style vermiculite layer.
My question is do you think this will work as a barrier to contamination. Will it allow for enough air exchange?
Thanks

If my friend is reading this correctly, it also creates a tin foil barrier with one tiny hole.
Polyfill seems easier and more effective.

that sounds like it will work, but will be less effective and more tedious than polyfil. go to a crafts store. for $3, you can get a huge bale of polyfil. it will last you hundreds of jars.

I agree w the polyfill idea, or even a micron-type filter then tape the hole.
BTW, Mushmaster: excellent links, I like the Libertarian quotes a lot.

Yes, there would be one tiny hole. Don't know but perhaps this wouldn't be enough for air exchange?
My friend hasn't tried poly-fil but was concerned after reading about contams possibly wicking into the jar.

as long as the polyfil stays dry (cap your jars with aluminum foil while PC'ing and you'll be alright), contams will not wick into the jar. anno says he uses polyfil, and anno is a mushroom GOD. haha.
polyfil works great. i can tell you this from experience.
if you're still worried about the polyfil, you can use tyvek instead. you can get tyvek from tyvek envelopes at the post office or a tyvek suit at a hardware store.
