Letting Jars colonize without lids?
    #15187232 - 10/06/11 03:46 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Besides Bargainbab, do any experienced cultivators let their jars colonize without lids? I dont just wondering.
Do you let your jars colonize without lids?
You may choose only one

The dry verm layer is the main barrier against contams. So it is completely possible to get away with not having a lid. That being said, if the location of your jars is in a basement or other humid place, the dry verm layer could easily become...Not so dry. Jars come with lids, and even if you use cups you still need aluminum foil over top during the PC process, so why take it off? Basically lids are cheap, and so is aluminum foil. If you are really against lids you can get away without them, but why risk it?

i cough in it daily. this provides moisture, and it benefits the mycelium's immune system. If you do this regularly you can colonize even in open air. The fungus has such a strong immune system. It'l actually colonize on other molds and bacteria!

As I said in the op, I don't do this. In another thread someone said lots of people do, so I wanted to know if a lot of people really do? I did a search and didn't see it mentioned so I made a poll. But I will go open a couple jars and cough on them just to see if your pulling my leg, Ill even stir it around in the dry verm layer

oh man i'm gonna have some good shrooms.

i incubate without lids whenever i can't find that one lid i need for the jar i already filled with BRF mix... but i still use foil on top and innoc through that. in fact, i have noticed that my foil lids make the fruit sub colonize faster and next batch i'm only using foil lids.

just me though.
