Moonure
    #15047373 - 09/08/11 10:45 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I get the general feelings on store bought shit is that it is shit due to composition (how much actual poo vs. composted forest material etc is in it) and that many places spray animal waste with anti-fungal, antibiotic, or other chemicals we don't want in a substrate. Also that it can vary from batch to batch and from area to area.

After calling and talking with the company I found out the compost is organic with sprays not being used while field aging the poo or added organic compost. It is also 51% manure. So does or has anyone use moonure?

I ended up getting a bag because it was $2.50 for 25lbs. I planned to mix it with primarily straw, some coir, some verm, some coffee, and crushed oyster. Anyone have insight or issue with this?

I'm going to give it a shot either way and will post here in a few months; just looking for any other experience with it.

It will work fine as long as you mix it with coir or vermiculite. By itself, manure compost sucks balls. The consistency is similar to dirt and sticks.

No sticks in mine and it's pretty fluffy. More than I expected. I don't think I will have problems with the mix I plan on using being there are quite a few nutrient sources rather than just the compost. I was asking because I only found a few posts mentioning Moonure brand and none with people who attest to it one way or the other.

Thanks for the info though

Update: I now have a 4.5"x8"x14" shoebox tub 3 days into colonization. About 55% moonure, 35% straw, 10% verm. 'Strain' is South American.

The consistency wasn't too bad. It was a bit mushy when I added water to pasteurize but evened out when I added the verm and straw in the end. One thing that did concern me was little bits of clay. Only one or two that I saw in 2 qts and they were smaller than a marble but I imagine other bags could be far worse. Plus these products vary by region.

I'll update when colonized and later when fruiting.
