Liberty cap ID needed
    #15185907 - 10/06/11 12:53 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

I took a walk in a park today and found a bunch of these growing everywhere. I'm pretty sure they're liberty caps, I just wanted to make sure.

I found them in medium length grass, in a well kept field in a local park. Last year I found mushrooms in the exact same spot that were identified as libs, so I'm assuming these are as well. We've had lots of rain the past week with some frigid nights, so the conditions seem to be right for fruiting.

I only picked two of them to take a picture, so hopefully this will be enough for a solid ID.

These two don't have the obvious nipple like you see on others, but there's definitely some sort of protrusion at the top of those two, and I saw others that definitely had the nipple in the same spot.

We only have 2 or 3 types of mushrooms here, so i/m betting they're good to go as well.

Sweet. Good to hear.

We only get a few types of mushrooms here, and only 1 or 2 psychedelic ones. I was looking at some look-alike mushrooms and It's definitely not a P. Strictipes or P. Mexicana, so that narrows it down a lot.

You might send a sample to an expert with a microscope.  They sure look like P. semilanceata or some other Psilocybe sp. lookalike.  The substrate sounds right for libs.

Cool find.

I went back and found some more mushrooms in the same places I've found other liberty caps.

Any of these look good? I've got them on a sheet doing a spore print now.

And I put them in a jar that had some herb in previously so that's why they're covered in little pieces. Don't mind those.

Definitely Psilocybe semilanceata, without a doubt.

Yes they're all liberty caps for sure. Had some rain recently here too so I'll be going for a hunt myself tomorrow I think.

Awesome. That makes me happy  Thanks for the help guys  I live in a place where the only other type of mushrooms that grow that look anything like P. Semilanceata are P.  Strictipes and those are easy to tell apart.

That's all I found today, so it must be just the start of the season. We have rain tonight and tomorrow with cold temps, so I'll check again saturday.
