Backward U.S. flags in Iraq
    #1518543 - 05/04/03 01:09 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Why is it that all U.S. soldiers have their flags patched on backwards?

I think there's more to it than that, I can't seem to find a picture from Operation Iraqi Freedom that doesn't have a backwards flag.

You might say, "it's just so happens they took the picture like that", fine then I challenge you to find a single picture released from Iraq that doesn't have the U.S. flag backwards. Did you catch the American soldier draping the American flag on his tank? backwards. He was on Larry King and when asked why he did this, he said he was told to do it. Also, when they brought down the Saddam statue, the American flag was placed backwards on Hussain's face.

they've been using those insignias for a while. it's like a flag on a pole being held up in a charge... look at it....

a military man could probably clear this up.

Maybe I've smoked too much of this dank bud, but is there really a frontward and/or backward way to fly the flag?  I always thought it just faced whichever way the wind was blowing.

and look -wouldn't the flag be the 'right' way if the guy was simply on the other side of the street?

its supposed to be as if the flag was flying with them, that is how it would fly, same thing with airplanes and such too.

But if you look the oncoming cars are facing the backwards flag, that is unless the picture was already reversed before it was posted.

Back in Boy Scouts they taught us the right way to fly a US flag.

It doesn't matter if it is being hung vertically or horizontally, the Blue field of starts is always supposed to be in the upper right corner.

I noticed this about the us troops alos, and it has been bothering me too, glad to see im not crazy as some say.

Well thats debateable

You should take Iraq flag for example. It's symetric so it doesn't matter where the wind blows.

good point.  I think we should change our flag so that it's symmetric.  asymmetry sucks.

this will solve everything!

Actually, the blue field of stars is upmost, and closest to the flagpole.

found this at a different board:

"Under current Army policy the appropriate sleeve, left or right, for wear of the U.S. flag patch is driven by the type of operation involved. The flag patch is worn on the right sleeve during joint or multinational operations where the distinguishing of individual national soldiers is desired and overrides tactical considerations. The flag patch is worn on the left sleeve when deployed in support of a United Nations operation.

Regardless of which sleeve, the U.S. flag must always be displayed with the blue star field facing forward. There are thus two separate flag patches in the Army inventory: the normal U.S. flag replica that is worn on the left sleeve, and what is referred to as the "reversed field" flag patch, which is worn on the right sleeve.

Lt. Col. Thurman P. Sharples III
U.S. Army Reserve Pers. Center
St. Louis, Mo."

Just so everyone can see how evil the US is to Iraqi's, that one pic that we have in here is of US soldiers giving food to starving Iraqi's. Mean bush! feeding them! They like starving! How dare we make them eat! Imperialist pigs! Allah will strike us down (right after he defends baghdad)

How clever of you to sarcastically imply that since we're giving them food it makes us the 'good guys'.
I'd like to suggest an analogy between Bush and Josef Mengele, aka the 'Angel of Death' of Auschwitz.

"The survivors tell how as children in Auschwitz they were visited by a smiling "Uncle Mengele" who brought them candy and clothes. Then he had the children (sic) delivered to his medical laboratory either in trucks painted with the Red Cross emblem or in his own personal car to undergo experiments."

I think that, since we are doign as much as we can to feed the jabber-wockies in Iraqistan, and people STILL don't think we are, bush should say "fuck them", take every drop of oil, and let those little tuscan's fend for themselves. Since you already think thats what hes doing, it couldn't make you hate him more, and we'd have DIRT CHEAP gas.

By the way, can some of you give me some figures as to how many "innocent" Iraqi's have been killed? I'm sure you beat your chests daily wailing about them, but how many are there? Just curious
