Should the mentally ill be allowed to vote?
    #1518325 - 05/03/03 09:05 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

This should provoke some interesting dialogue.

Should there be any restrictions on who gets to vote?

There are now.  Should we eliminate them?

They should start a thing where drug users can't vote. Oh wait, they already do that. Damn fascists!

i thought mentally ill people already did vote. unless you mean people who are clinicaly mentally ill, and not the comon dumbass. Yes everyone should vote, coplete acurate depiction of the american people, not just the ones who are considered "sane" and "white" and "rich" and "male" and "6 feet tall" and all that other stuff.

Let's see, to vote for a man that you never met, whom you know only through well orchestrated public appearances on TV, to give him the power to start a nuclear war, to send your children off to die in some far away land, to wage war against people who have never transgressed against you (because their local politician might be an asshole), a man whom you have never had a conversation with, you do not personally know his family or any of his friends, for all you know he may be an actor playing a part...

Is this sane? I'm inclined to think that voting itself is sometimes an act of madness.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Felons should be allowed to vote. The government should not have the power to take away someone's right to vote.

Mentally ill? So if a person has depression or an anxiety problem they have a mental illness, or maybe you are talking about SEVERE mental illness? People cant help mental illness and you know that, as you frequent the Support Group Central. Of course they should be allowed to vote! Its like saying, should people with cancer (or someone with another diesease afflicted upon them) be allowed to vote? same thing with mental illnessess and disorders.

In a Democracy, everyone should be allowed to vote, no matter what their circumstances. Democracy should reflect the will of the people, no matter how stupid those people are.
