There's only so much energy available, so lots of pins equals small fruits. If you had only had a few mushrooms form, they would be much larger.
Off topic, but I'd suggest avoiding aluminum foil under your substrate. The mycelium will 'consume' the foil as you will see when you remove it. The foil will be full of holes that the mycelium has eaten. Metals absorbed by the mycelium will end up in fruitbodies, and aluminum has been implicated in alzhimers and other conditions. Just use a dark tray to avoid pinning on the bottom. RR

Fully colonized substrate usually wont "eat" the foil as rapidly as colonizing substrate. So when you put cakes on foil, little will happen IME.
Off topic, but it would be better for you to revive the thread that the quote was in so relevent discussion can be read by people, it makes it easier to search when there aren't 1000 threads about the same thing.

The thread was from five years ago. I'm no expert on such matters, but I was under the assumption that the fruiting bodies do not absorb toxic materials from which the mycelium consumed.

Mycelium can however pass heavy metals into the fruiting bodies of mushrooms.
From Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms- Page 14:
"In heavily industrialized areas, the soils are typically contaminated with a wide variety of pollutants, particularly petroleum-based compounds, polychlorinated biphenols (PCBs), heavy metals, pesticide-related compounds, and even radioactive wastes. Mushrooms grown in polluted environments can absorb toxins directly into their tissues, especially heavy metals (Bressa, 1988; Stijve 1974,1976,1992). As a result, mushrooms grown in these environments should not be eaten. Recently, a visitor to Ternobyl, a city about 60 miles from Chernobyl, the site of the worlds worst nuclear power plant accident, returned to the United States with a jar of pickled mushrooms. The mushrooms were radioactive enough to set off Geiger counter alarms as the baggage was being processed. Customs officials promptly confiscated the mushrooms. Unfortunately, most toxins are not so readily detected. A number of fungi, however, can be used to detoxify contaminated environments, in a process called "bioremediation." "
Obviously the book is a bit older, but I am pretty sure the consensus is the mycelium will eat and digest heavy metals.

However, it does not appear that the aluminum is transferred to the fruit, even though the metabolites dissolve it. RR

So what if it was from five years ago, relevent discussion is relevent discussion. Part of the problem with his place is the amount of threads you have to wade through to find good information.
Toxins wont travel unless its bacteria, but heavy metals will
