better lc injection port method
    #15172365 - 10/03/11 03:37 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

hello i just thought i would tell people how i make my lc injection port

first ill take a tiny glass drill bit and drill a hole in a quart jar about a half inch up from the bottom, drill slow or youll crack it. then ill take silicone and put a nice blob on the hole and flaten it out make sure its gotten good penetration. then i let it cure. and voila its done. no tilting spilling or getting the filter wet, and you can get every last bit of mycelium out

ill make my lc blender tek later when i get another camera, lab style.

there are tons of ideas about lids and injection ports. just search around for self sealing/self healing ports etc.

have a look at this cheap self sealing injection port tek

I believe what oxana is saying is that his/her method places the injection port at the base of the jar.

So sucking out the mycelium is easier and you're able to get every last bit. Did you read the post?

I think its a pretty awesome idea, although you gotta have a glass drill bit to do it. I for one do not.

How big is the hole you drill? One quarter inch?

Very interesting idea. How well does the silicone hold on glass over time?

Idea: you could score the glass on the area around both sides of the hole.. that should give the RTV more surface area to adhere to and ultimately make a better seal than just on smooth glass..

Looks like a trip to the hardware store for a glass bit might be in order.  I can not wait to see simple pics of this LC in action, I'm about to attempt some raw sugar LCs.. and this tek could prove to be a much better syringe site!  Great, simple idea!

Interesting idea. I don't know how well the silicone will stick to the glass, but if it forms a permenant seal I don't see why it wouldn't work. I put my silicone port on the lid along with some automotive tubing stuffed with polyfill. If the tubing is placed in the center, the jar can be shook pretty hard. I do tilt my jars to draw from them, but there's no leakage.

I like it. Many of my lids start to rust where the holes are, I often do not use filter discs at all, I inject sterile air instead.

But there is no reason you cannot drill a larger hole for the filter too, at the top.

Roughen the surface as mentioned, but better still is to use transparent silicone, but a good blob on both sides of the glass and they join up in the hole and are much more secure, as its a mechanical plug, not just adhering to the glass. As it is transparent you can still see where the hole is when you go to inject.

Glass can take a while do drill though, it is best to do it under water so it doesn't heat up, the bit lasts longer too. A tile drill will do the job, no need for expensive diamond bits, I have them for making bongs.

They look like this

i discovered the idea making diy bongs

im not sure what size hole i drill but its tiny about an 1/8 inch. i dont use rtv as i cant see where the hole is in the glass is, instead i use clear silicone, it has held up for ten lc runs so its clear that it isnt a problem.

also i make sure i get a nice blob on the other side of the glass, however, believe it or not it sticks to the glass pretty nicely, without being "roughed up".

i have been doing this for some time now with my l.c. jars and it works great

i dont use a glass drill bit though, I've got a little dremel grinder with a diamond coated bit that i use instead

dremels work too
so do the tile drillbits

ive just never thought the effort was worth it.

i dont mind tilting my jar.

I have puny hands, so getting LC/GLC into the syringe is the hardest part of cultivation so far for me.

I usually end up crouched atop a bench, holding the tilted jar with my fucking KNEES, leaving my two hands free to provide the necessary force for sucking liquid mycelium into the syringe.

For whatever reason, only my big 60cc syringes require this ridiculous treatment. I have no problem leaving my knees out of it when using smaller syringes.

 I'm lucky so far I haven't got a contam from doing this. Obviously my knees aren't in the glovebox.
