Testing pH
    #1518032 - 05/03/03 07:59 PM (14 years, 27 days ago)

What's the best cheap way to test the pH of my casing material, and what's the optimal pH?

I'd suggest getting some full range pH testing strips. Ones that read from 1 right up to 14. Then just dip in and read the results just before you sterilize the mix. Then add more buffering agent or casing material to adjust.

The instructions on how to read them should come with each individual kit. Also, the pH you are looking for is somewhere in the 7 to 7.5 range if i'm not mistaken. Therefore neutral. That's the way those shroomies like it!! Hope all goes well.

peace,
seth

I would suggest you acquire a Ph testing meter. A Kelway, if you can afford it (Stamets sells them, but you can find them cheaper, on the net). If that is over your budget (/) any decent pH meter from a gardem supply mart (usualy under $20) will suffice. With inexpensive ones, it is wise to test & calibrate against litmus strips, at first - so you know it is true.

Ph meters are quick - simple - east & cheap. Without one, you are only guestimating the pH of a casing mix. Don't kid yourself - guestimating can be so farout of the ballpark - it destroys a casing attempt, if PH IS WAY OFF BASE.

EDIT = optimal Ph IMHO = 7 to 7.7

6T...damn....I'm taking you shopping sometime....PH meters are cheap...and although the strips are cheaper nothing beats the convienience of the meter...

I like casings a little alkaline, 7.7-7.9, most contams dont care for it and the fungi tolerate it well enough...just make sure adjustment are small amounnt at a time and that you check 2 times before applying the material....

I tried a ph memter from Lowes once but it never seemed to function at all. No matter what I put the probe into the needle never moved off 7 (neutral). Test strips look kinda like a pain but at least you know the results will be acurate.

never really worried about ph to much Perhaps should start. If its to high or low will the mycellium just not grow or are there other tell tale signs?

You had a BUM meter & should have taken it back to the store & replaced.

Accurate meters are great, inexpensive & toilet flush simple to use & maintain.
