Someone said a neoconservative is a liberal who's been mugged.

Here's a website devoted to the bastards, NEOCONSERVATISM ONLINE

--------------------
To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Go to newamericancentury.org for foreign policy based on the Neo-Conservative mindset (this site basically lays out Bush foreign policy). A Neo-Conservative believes the United States is in a unique position being the sole global power and that we should spread democracy throughout the world through preemptive wars and such. And believe me, NO Neo-Conservative has ever been a liberal.

You ever heard of David Horowitz? P.J. O'Rourke? Irving Kristol? Norman Podhoretz? Daniel Bell?

It kind of is phreaky... the nature of a true conservative can be found at the root of the word. They supposedly believe in conserving old values and in limited government. (Funny that a conservative regime is behind the USA PATRIOT Act and even added a new department--the biggest gov't expansion in 50 years I think.)

And pinkshark, I've heard of one or two of those guys but are you sure they're Neo-Cons converted formerly TRUE liberals? I've heard of people moderating through time and such but that's an incredibly drastic change in thought.

I thought P.J. O'Rourke was a Libertarian.

This brings me to a point I'd like to make. It seems to me that neo-conservatism is conservatism with the libertarian ideas thrown out.

"A conservative who radically wants to change things...is that close? "

Thats a contradiction, sure. But I suppose, and I'm not sure on this, that Neo-Conservatives want to push all this pre-emptive war and all that jazz, for the purpose of keeping the status quo. I.E. America on top. I dunno...

I do not believe you because I know that you are mistaken, I have been following conservative political thought for about 25 years (I do not count myself among their ranks). Pinky lists a few (but I don't think P.J. O'Rourke can be classified as a neo-con).

Yeah, P.J. O'Rourke describes himself as a Republican but holds a lot of Libertarian ideals. My point is, he used to be a Liberal, and if you read his works, you'll find little there that disagrees with the bulk of the neo-con stance on things. If it makes you feel better, we can take P.J. off the list.

As for the others on the list, they all used to be liberals or Lefties or Democrats or however you want to define the opposite of what they are now. Irving Kristol and Daniel Bell are considered tqo of the "Founding Fathers" of the neo-cons.

David Horowitz is definitely a neo-conservative and was a true leftist before that. He wrote a book called "Destructive Generation: Second Thoughts About The '60s" which was really interesting and well written. I don't share his political beliefs but he did make some really good points in that book.

I guess I stand corrected... I personally am pretty far left and can't possibly fathom becoming a righty out of nowhere, least of all a neo-con.
