I have been a long time fan of Firefox but I've been thinking about giving Chrome a try.

What are some of the pros and cons of each?

yo check this out:

http://www.favbrowser.com/browser-memory-ram-usage-firefox-35-rc-safari-4-opera-10-beta-google-chrome-30-dev/

I have been getting chrome notifications about very high memory usage every time I use netflix. firefox uses much less memory, I am switching soon.

Chrome for me, though the new version of Firefox is actually pretty good now that they fixed most of the memory issues Firefox is known for.  However, it loads pages slower for me than Chrome and Firefox still hasn't separated each tab into its own process.

as far as I know Chromium and SRware Iron are both freeware alternatives to chrome that offer the same browser, minus the spying on you all the time.

But people like being spied on. That's why I have a facebook account.

FYI: Adverts fuck me off. The only time I scream "FUCK OFF" is when I get someone ringing me up to find it's an advert on "this is an urgent message regarding your payment protection insurance."

Fixed.

There is a big difference between freeware and open source.

Not really sure what you mean.  I think you might have it the wrong way around...

If you are using a proxy its effectively like a tunneling service.  When you access info via that proxy the other end will see the IP's etc in the packet headers as that of the proxy and send it back.

Once the proxy gets this is forwards it back to you.  So yeh the records on the proxy will show the content you have access (if its logged) and the 'corporation' will have records of things being accessed by the proxy server.  SO basically the proxy is acting on behalf of you, and doing the connection request etc for you.  Hence the name 'proxy' just like someone legally acting on your behalf if you ill etc.

This is in contrast the to NAT (network address translation) you might have on a home router where you (your computer) still make the connections etc but the NAT just updates the addresses/ports as requests transverse the link.

Also keep in mind that not all proxy servers are anonymous, its often assumed but not a definite.
