anyway, maybe we are done with the server part of this conversation, maybe not. anyway I tried to edit my /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf file with this:

INTERFACES="eth0"
Sample /etc/dhcpd.conf
default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;
option routers 192.168.1.254;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2;
option domain-name "mydomain.example";

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.100;
range 192.168.1.150 192.168.1.200;
}

I don't know if I did that right. but there was no option to save the conf file, so it was almost entirely a waste of time :sad:

actually that gave me this:

[ Read 3 lines (Warning: No write permission) ]

anyway I did that first line wrong it should have been this:

INTERFACES="wlan0 eth0"

but anyway the point I was trying to make is that I don't think you CAN save what you write in the log from the command line, because there is only an option to write in the log or to close the command interface. I'm trying to figure out why they open the option like that for you. OH well, thanks anyway

try "sudo vi dhcpd.conf"
and if vi gives you any gruff with saving, try :w! or :x!

:facepalm: dude I feel like we are living on two different planets, and it's not your fault, and it's not my fault. it's just that it's the Internet, and with no actual way to communicate clearly, with verbal language, or visual description, then two people on other end of the line can't understand what the other person is saying.

I always log in with sudo su before I enter any commands in any terminal, the problem isn't that the terminal won't open vi dhcpd.conf, it's that it doesn't have an option to save. it just opens a terminal session that is looped or something, there is no way out, just a way in. it gives me a set of lines to modify and enter text, but then that's it. here, I know, let me upload a screen shot, hopefully that will help explain it:

fuck, :sad:, I couldn't upload a screen shot because the image wasn't compressed, and since I'm using linux, after compressing, shroomery wouldn't recognize a .tar file. I tried switching to the virtual machine with windows xp, and entering the i.p. config of host, I got the desktop ok, but couldn't see the original screen shot or the compressed image. I tried putting a check mark in the check box where it says 'make file executable,' but still that didn't help. and it's not because the desktop of linux wouldn't show up. other files that were marked as executable DID in fact show up. who says computer aren't hard some times? I'm not Steve Jobs, I'm not perfect  :stanhopefacepalm:

yeah. anything is annoying without visual/physical aid. mac and windows can be annoying also. and yeah linux can be EXTREMELY annoying, and VERY incompatible with other os programs

it is free though, and it's hard to bitch about free shit :shrug:

This is odd. Do you actually have two DNS servers in your subnet at those IP addresses? Usually, you'll let DNS requests be forwarded to a DNS server on the web by your router. In that case, the domain-name-servers option will be set to the router address, or it will be simply left out. Also leave out the my-domain option (don't need it unless you want your network to be associated with a domain that you actually registered and have linked with a publicly accessible IP address, which I bet you haven't).

Yeah, welcome to VI. Here's a manual you can use: http://www.cs.fsu.edu/general/vimanual.html
Alternatively, and if you're using Ubuntu, you could use Mousepad, which is more user friendly.

yeah I don't know why I added two d.n.s. entries. I don't have half the experience to know how to handle two domains or two d.n.s. entries. Right now I am trying to work on one dns entry, to give out dhcp to one subnet. thanks for the links and thanks for the help.

also, the vi link looks helpful, do you have a link to mouse pad?? hey, you seem to know a lot :thumbup:

ok ok ok, so I'm learning. but I'll get it eventually. I just need to not think this stuff is learned in one day. if I keep at it though, who knows, I might be giving instructions to people on how to use dhcp, which is what I want, but it's very difficult to learn everything all at once. at least I have a good basic general understanding of how all this stuff works together. you do need a foundation first, before you can build the rest of the building :thumbup:
