Do you mean a spawned bulk substrate in the colonization stage?

Or, do you mean a spawned bulkk substrate, that you have added a casing cover to?

My foaf uses a fail safe method to control substrate moisture. He simply drills a few holes in the bottom of substrate trays, then covers then with filter material prior to adding the substrate & spawn.

In that way, if by chance, the substrate contains excess moisture, it can vent/drain out the bottom of the tray.

Not much help for an existing condition, but - you might ponder doing so - the next go around..

If the substrate is in fact ..............TO WET.

That will lead to bacterial problems & rot. Sometimes the surface will still colonize & even fruit out - but poorly.

About the only thing I can suggest is slide a small (clean) spatula under the substrate & give the lower extreme a quick look see & sniff. If the bottom is a soggy smelly mess, best bet is trash it.

If not, but slightly to moist? You might drill/cut/poke (or whatever), a few holes in the tray bottom, if you think it is worth trying to vent/drain & save. Sometimes you can save one, most times -- NOT :frown:.

I know you know this, but as always -- be a clean freak about all this.
