Egg Shells for PH buffer..
    #1517654 -

My galpal has been asked to use 2tsp's of eggshell per quart of casing material, and thats what she intends on doing. She was wondering how to clean off any dried egg? Should she break the shell and boil it perhaps? Break, rinse, place in jar and Pressure cook to assure sterility?

yes...

boil the egg shell for a couple of minutes and try and remove as much of the membrane as possible, grind it really fine and and PC it....if it's prepared with the casing material then you should be fine....

A coffee grinder sounds like it would work well to grind it.

She's not sure if she wants to use her coffee grinder which is exclusively for bud....she may use a handheld nut grinder. Brutal!

Throw empty chicken egg shells into a pot w/water & boil them a bit. That cleans off any organic residue.

Drain, crush with a potato masher (or whatever).

Simple as that.

Suggest you test pH of any casing mix, with a pH test meter (any garden supply has them under $20).

Chicken egg, oyster shells do not adjust pH quickly. Hydrated lime (Hoffmans Brand @ most garden supply stores for around $3 a box) works QUICKLY.

Just BEWARE, as it is hot stuff (read FAQ on casing pH).

Crushed egg/oyster shells are intended as a long term buffer.

6T
