Collectors Edition made Wide Mouth Half Pints Non-existent

I decided to do some cake substrate experiments with an isolate I'm trying out. I decided I might as well get some real wide mouth half pint jars, instead of taller half pint ones. I drove around town checking everywhere. I checked two walmarts, two giants, two weis markets, a wegmans, and a target. Non of those places had the regular wide mouth half pint jars. Its seems like ever since those collector edition wide mouth half pints came out, no one carries the old ones. I use those new smaller wider half pints for agar, but other then that there pretty worthless. I'm not about to order jars offline since I have always had success with the other type of jars, but come on, why is it so damn hard to carry both types!

I had the same problem, I almost put off growing until a couple months ago I ran into an Ace Hardware and they had them (along with verm and perlite) Now would be the season you should see more and more stores carrying them. But if you have an Ace nearby check it out man. Goodluck.

If you look at the side of the Mason box that all current jars come in, it makes no mention of 1/2 pint wide mouths. It does seem that they discontinued them; possibly not. I'd say just ask your local hardware store to try to order them, then you'll know for sure. Best luck.

If they don't have them at Ace, you can order them online and have them delivered to the store for pickup with no delivery fee.
The only stores I've ever actually found them in are Fred Meyers.

You could always ask the hardware store manager to order them for you. It'll probably take a week or so. I've done it many times

I believe you can have the jars shipped to a store near you. I think you can do that with walmart...
Ace is hit and miss. Call before you go. I called 3 before finding one with the right jars.

That is a link to an online store selling them, you can see what they look like. Pretty useless and expensive to use for cakes, work with agar pretty well tho.
Ace hardware huh? Interesting, never thought that a hardware store would carry them. I guess I'll check them out tomorrow. Now that I think about it, I have found a lot of random shit I couldn't find anywhere else at Ace hardware. I Always wondered how a small hardware store like Ace was staying in business with a Lowes and Home depot in town...Now I know hahaha.

thanks. I recently picked up some ziploc 8oz bowls because I don't like the tall skinny glass ones, which are the only option at my store.

I too picked up some of those ziploc containers for agar. I guess they would work pretty well for cakes. Has anyone had any luck with the little 4oz ball jars? They taper out so the top is larger then the bottom and would allow for cakes to slide right out. I remember using one, one time to test out an LC to see if it was contamed. It colonized quick, but when fruited it never gave off any fruits. Then again that syringe had crap genetics so that doesn't say much. They seem like a fun, and quick little way to grow mushrooms, anyone had any luck with them?

You can always just make self-healing lids w/ SFDs, EZ-felt or Tyvek & use WM pint jars. Only fill the jars 1/3-1/2 full & it'll work. Not necessary to put the dry verm layer w/ this method.
I've never messed w/ plastic before.

Interesting, I have some extra tyvek lids and some Ez-felt...actually Friendly Felt lids laying around so I may try that.

The 1/4th pint jars are pretty nifty little bastards. I haven't really experimented with them other then that one time. I gave it to a friend as a present to fruit, along with a 2 liter soda bottle sgfc. It never fruited, but who knows how well he cared for it. Also like I said, the genetics weren't good to start with. I was hoping someone had some experience fruiting 1/4th pint cakes, because I would like to give it another go.
