Growing for the first time.
    #15176349 - 10/04/11 11:52 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys im new to this forum. I decided recently that i wanted to attempt growing. Before i started i wanted to consult some people who have actually done it before. I was thinking about using the brown rice technique. i also am using this site called lilshopofspores.com to get my spores. i dont know which ones would be the best for first time growers but i heard B+ strain isnt bad. or maybe pink buffalo. if someone could help me with that and also the materials i need. im trying to keep the cost around 100 dollars

We decided on Lipa yai, Koh samui and Pink Buffalo for our types of spores. We get 3 10cc syringes. how many rice cakes and mason jars do i need. I heard approximately 1cc per rice cake per mason jar. is that about right?

www.mushroomvideos.com will show you the whole tek.

Yes, 1cc per jar.
I'd recommend messing around w/ a 12cc syringe before hand.
As, it'll be a bit difficult to hit exactly a 1/4cc per inoculation point.

Also, don't mention sites for spores & growing. It's not cool in these parts.

You need to go here: www.mushroomvideos.com

Watch those videos, and follow the instructions explicitly. Dont cut any corners.

Lilshopofspores is a good reputable vendor, though I have never used them myself. I hear good things about them.

As far as inoculation, 1cc may be a bit much. Spores go a long way. Just inject until you see liquid come out of the needle, and that will be plenty. Be sure to shake the hell out of that syringe first, and flame sterilize between each jar.

How many jars depends on how many cakes you want to make. Remember that spores will keep for a long time in the fridge, storage isn't an issue. Keeping the cost below $100 is doable, if you go with the big pot for sterilization. Though I would say that the best money you can spend in this hobby is on a good large Pressure Cooker.

Welcome to the Shroomery

It might be hard to grow all the cakes you could from 3 syringes with only a $100. People do it, but I'm a realist. You probably have $50 after you bought the spores. You still need your vermiculite, brown rice flour, jars, sterilization and cleaning tools, and the fruiting chamber. If you already have a lot of this stuff then you should be able to do it fairly easily.

For your fruiting chamber try the Shotgun Fruiting Chamber Tek, that should be one of the cheapest ways to fruit that many cakes at once. Or... you could go with the Poor Man's Pod. Basically some perlite, a 2 liter bottle, a colonized cake, and some holes. Good enough for one cake at a time.

Welcome!

& I completely agree that a Pressure Cooker is the best investment you could make if you find the cash.

brf pf-tek works good, its very simple. Good luck!

check out my grow log for my first one, I posted good links at the bottom that would be very helpful to you- in fact they will teach you everything that you need to know

perlite at the bottem of your fruiting chamber + misting should be all the humidity you need

The middle of December is doable if you start now. But you'll probably only have one flush in that time frame. Whats the time restriction all about? There may be a solution for it.

No need for a humidifier unless you live in arid desert. A SGFC will work just fine for you. I would spend the majority of that money on a good PC, it will be worth every penny, especially if you stick with the hobby. $150 is on the high end of what you would ever need to spend for a small scale grow, especially if that doesn't include the spores. Once you make the initial investment, growing shrooms is one of the cheapest things you can do. Seems like everything minus the Verm and BRF is reusable. And those two items are cheap as hell.

Also, ANY cubensis spores are good for a beginner. Just ignore all of the advertising hype. They all grow under the same conditions, and will produce close to the same amount of mushies. When it comes down to it, they are all the same species of mushroom. When you are first starting out, its easy to get distracted and hung up with this.

You already got some sound advice so I would just like to show you my supplies and there cost:

Ace Hardware Store
8qt perlite $5
8qt Verm $5
12 1/2 pint widemouth jars $10
2 lbs brown rice (I grind my own to flour)$4

Home Depot

56qt sterlite tote $6
Hydrometer/thermometer $10

And my spores were from a sponsor, can't mention the name but pick from any sponsor here and you can't go wrong. But mine came out to twenty dollars and got a freebie

So $60 dollars is what I spent.

hygro  - $6.

Digital of either of the above is shit.
Keep it simple.

First off i would like to thank everyone for being so responsive to my thread.

Wildernessjunkie-- The set date is because i am going out of town for a few weeks. and from what ive read/heard its not possible to continue a grow while being away for an extended amount of time like that.

The influence-- dude 60 dollars! thats awesome good work. thanks for telling me the place to get that hydrometer.

TranscendingLife- Thanks for the video link. Just watched the videos on growing with the BRF method.  They were really helpful.

So i saw that the guy was putting about four cakes wide in the tote. I was wondering approx. how many cakes can go in a tote. and if having too many in one tote could damage the growth of the shrooms. also i noticed they really didnt tell you about how much to mist the shrooms in the tote after they have been dunk and rolled. Do you have to mist them daily or do you wait till the perlite dries out?

You can stall fully colonized cakes by putting them in the refrigerator.

I like to mist and fan 2 times per day. More FAE is better though. Shrooms love FAE.

Also, I like to inoculate cakes just prior to going out of town. Then I can come back to colonization.

cakes shouldn't be closer than 2" apart

FAE = Fresh Air Exchange.

Not sure how long they can stay in the fridge....Until they contaminate I imagine. A couple of weeks I imagine should be doable though. I wouldn't refrigerate between flushes though. I cant justify why this is, it just somehow seems like a bad idea. Maybe someone can come along and tell us that it wont hurt anything.

A fully colonized cake is pretty contam resilient.  Putting in a cold environment discourages contams as well.. you should be
