Too late for bulk...?
    #15158517 - 09/30/11 02:56 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey, first off, I just wanna say, 98% of my questions are answered via the search function, but this one I can't seem to find.

I have a few PF cakes that have been in fruiting conditions for about 11 1/2 days now with no signs of pinning. I have been curious about doing bulk for a while, and have read up on it quite a bit, and I was wondering: can I use these cakes as spawn, or should I make new ones? Does mycelium growth stop after being introduced to fruiting conditions? Thanks in advance for your help! ^_^

Just fruit them as cakes. If you want to use cakes as spawn, you should use fresh cakes. After 11 days in the FC there are too many contaminants on the surface. Also, your cakes are probably going to pin in the next few days (as long as your fruiting conditions are correct) so there is no reason to change your strategy now. Stick to the original plan.

too menny airborn contams in the fruiting chamber to spawn to something, if you live somewhere humid you can spawn them outside if its not already too cold

Good on ya for thinking bulk!

#1 thing though is to diagnose why your cakes aren't pinning -- because the fruiting conditions are the same.. So IMHO if you have no fruits forming on cakes, your bulk efforts will be in vain with the same results. Now as far as your Q's...

"can I use these cakes as spawn, or should I make new ones?"
-- Do both! I'd soak the cakes in a 4% peroxide solution for 12 hours, crumble them up by hand as best as possible without "smushing" the myc

"Does mycelium growth stop after being introduced to fruiting conditions?"
-- Yes and no, mycelium knows when its hit the "end" of the substrate - aka fully colonized. If it finds un-colonized substrate, it will spring into action again as long as its not thrown off by light.

So pick your bulk tek, soak & break those cakes up, incubate for 7-14 days depending on your spawn to substrate ratio and tub size, and then fruit as normal again for much better yields.

For me here are the 3 most important, and really only things I do for successful grows -

1. 95% humidity
2. Fanning twice, never more than 3 times daily
3. Let them get a few hours of real, indirect sunlight!!*

* Using dual 40w T5 CFL lights took over two weeks to get pins on my first bulk grow - when I put them near a south facing window and they got about 4 hours of diffused sun I had pins and fruit bodies within 48 hours. Never underestimate the power of the sun

Hops this helps!

Really? My bulk substrates are all fine.. I'm running a HEPA filter on low, 24/7 in my grow room. If you don't have the ability to get a HEPA filter, pickup the generic Walmart disinfectant spray for $2 a bottle and clean the room you're working in.. Wipe the walls clean, dust, then vacuum.. Make sure you close and cover the AC vent in your room or it will contam. It can and will work.

tried spawning spent cakes to some coir on 2 occations only to contam halfways through colonization guess it greatly depends on your enviorment and sterility.

whatever course of action you decided to take i would like to hear the results someday op
