Problems with distinguishing flushes for dunking - can we inject cakes with water?

So I've had trouble distinguishing flushes on my PF tek cakes. We'll pick mushrooms but there are always other mushrooms in development, some pins, some inbetween the pin and harvest-worthy stage.
Can we boil some water and inject water into the tops of the cakes to replenish their water-supply? Because there is really no clear differentiation between flushes, they're all just constantly producing mushrooms.
I've read "pick all the mushrooms, then dunk, don't worry about pins" but they've all been producing mushrooms constantly and there are always mushrooms in various stages of growth.
If we can inject water, how much water per cake? Two cakes are turning blue with drying and no longer producing mushrooms and we'll just drunk those but I don't know what to do about the rest of them.

If there is no clear difference between flushes then it is probably the same flush. People try to get all the mushrooms of a flush to grow at the same time but that's not always what happens. At the end of the flush nothing will be growing. At that point the mycelium will take a break for a while anyways so it's the best time to dunk.

Ok things are fine now, some of the cakes have clearly entered a dormant phase and the others don't seem far behind. I didn't realize that there can be several "crops" of mushrooms within one flush.
