(pics) Use of Bags with colonized quart jars
    #15172460 - 10/03/11 03:59 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

These are pics of the type of bag I have. I have colonized rye grain jars but am having trouble understanding how to proceed with both casing and pressure cooking it so it does not burst.

Do you want to expand your colonized spawn jars into bags of spawn? Its not clear what you are trying to do.

If you want to create more spawn with the bags, you fill them with hydrated rye just like the jars. Fold it over, tape it, and PC it for 90-120 minutes at 15 PSI.

Keep the bags off the bottom of the cooker, and keep them from touching the sides. I've never used bags without a flowhood. They aren't as easy and quick to open and dump spawn into as a jar, so opening and dealing with it without a sterile air flow is risky. Should be doable though, in a glove box and with very careful work. Sealing it up without getting non-sterile air into it may be tricky, as impulse sealers aren't small and easy to work with in a box. You may be better off with just jars at this point. Bags just allow for more efficient use of an autoclave / pressure cooker.

I'm not sure what casing has to do with spawn bags...?
