Grow-kit Green * 1
    #15172155 - 10/03/11 02:46 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I've been testing out a grow-kit and it developed a green patch on top before producing mushrooms...I was wondering what it was and if the mushrooms that grew around it are safe or not.

At first:

One week later:

These were growing in a bag in a cupboard with a regular temperature of 21C...there was a weekend when I went away and the temps dropped to 19 which is when the green developed.

they're safe, as long as you'll properly store/dry them. green mold itself is not that dangerous for consumption, it just is troublesome for substrates.

The good news: You can eat them most likely, that doesn't look like a harmful contam to me.

The bad news: By leaving an open container with green mold in it in your house wide open you have likely spread the spores of the contam into your home and could have complicated growing in the future(lots of contams)

Thanks for letting me know, I was sent this growkit for free to try out so I haven't lost anything.

I only have two spaces in my house for the mushrooms, one is for printing and drying the wild ones and the other one is where I was growing my kit...where did the mold come from? was it already in the kit or did it come from my house? In the same cupboard I had a box with cardboard where I'm trying to get oyster mycelium...could this have complicated things?

That's trichoderma, green mold and is a common contaminant.  It is found in soil and all over the world naturally.  As mentioned before, it can cause complications with substrates and casings, but is relatively harmless to humans.  I would harvest what's there, and toss that entire container.  Clean your room up well, and uh, well I've never let a trich contam go that long or far so...

Haha, welcome to the forum... work on timing a bit lol.

I agree that it is trich...
To the OP, since the container was open for so long with such an extreme infestation of trich sporulating... it has VERY likely infected much of your home. It has absolutely infected the surrounding area. That being said, trich is very common and spores were likely already in your home in small amounts, this grow has made those amount tremendously higher. If you don't clean EXTREMELY well you are likely to have future grows plagued by the same problem. Keep in mind that spores travel by many ways, including clothing, and that means most of your home could be contaminated. Take every measure possible to clean the house within reason, and clean the immidiate area exposed even more, bleach is your friend. That being said, it is not realistic to think you will kill all of the spores you set loose, and I highly recommend that in the future you take ALL required AND recommended sterile procedures whenever working with fungi in your home. This means using a glovebox, alcohol, flame, etc. when doing work that risks contamination otherwise you run an elevated risk of contaminating your grows. Also, at the 1st sign of ANY contam... quarantine it and post pics on here ASAP(within the hour if possible) so we can help you before it is too late like this one. Sometimes things are even savable... like with cobweb. best of luck on the next grow, the mushrooms are safe to eat btw. Any more questions feel free to ask, sorry for the bad news again
