Cakes won't rehydrate?
    #15171238 - 10/03/11 11:03 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

This is going to be kind of a long story short here, if you want to read the whole story it's at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15142633

I birthed cakes to the sgfc 11 days ago and was having trouble pinning, and got two really tiny shrooms. Less than 1" by the time the veil tore. I was told that cakes usually weigh 115grams, and any less than 100 grams is too dry. I weighed mine and they were all at 75grams! So, I just did a 24 hour dunk and when I took them out, they weigh 95 grams soaking wet with the verm layer still on. I couldn't really rinse it off because there were pins growing on the cakes. How is it possible that they barely took any water on after 24 hours? They were weighted down in the pot, so I know they were fully submerged.

Are they normal sized?
I've weighed the difference in dry and wet cakes.
But I don't think I've ever had one weigh 100g.
usually around 55-60gs wet.

But I recently had a similar issue where a syringe i got was completely useless. It would colonize fine but then do nothing afterwards.

Sounds like they took on an assload of water - more than 1/4 their mass!  20g of water absorbed by a 75g pf cake seems to me like a good amount, and that your cakes are in fact hydrating.  Cakes vary greatly from grower to grower and even batch to batch by the same grower.

Your cakes could have been slightly smaller than the comparison you used, thus the difference in weight?  There are so many variables in pf cakes; e.g. water content of your jars at sterilization, substrate compaction, substrate size, etc.  that I would determine the comparison of your cakes weight to the 'ideal' in your comparison of 100g to 125g as being a moot point.

The mere fact that your cakes picked up >25% of their mass in water over a 24 hour period indicates they are in fact hydrating, that they were in fact dry, and that they should now in fact produce a proper flush.

Good luck mane!

Ohhh I can't believe I didn't think of that! I know for a fact that I fill them less than most people, I don't tap the jar down at all and I get a little more than 6 jars out of the recipe for 5.

But I definitely don't think the cakes themselves really took on any water, because I didn't rinse the verm off and the verm is now soaked - dripping wet when I got the weight of 95 grams. I picked one up half an hour later and there was a little puddle on the aluminum foil. Then it weighed 91 grams.

Thank you for pointing that out, I'm sure that's part of the reason they don't weigh 115grams.

Sorry I didn't see your post at first! They are 1/2 pints. 55-60 grams sounds really light! You don't use 1/4 pints? Now I'm wondering if I've even figured out my problem. In the other post we figured out that it was a HEPA filter I had near my sgfc but it didn't blow air at it. If that wasn't drying the cakes out, then I have no idea why I am getting tiny shrooms.

Multispore is a genetic crap-shoot.
But I once did a grow of some cakes and used a little too much coffee, I think the nitrogen being too high caused them to not fruit.
You do anything like that with your cakes?
This is all speculation btw, I haven't been doing this very long.

I think happyhippie is talking about your fruits...
It seems pretty crazy to think you can get up to 70 fresh grams of mushrooms with a cake that weighs 50-60 grams fully hydrated...

Ohhh maybe. I was talking about my cake itself weighing 75 grams. The fruits weighed 0.8 grams WET or less! (But they dried to about 20% of that instead of 8% because they were so dried out to begin with)

I was talking about the cakes.
haven't done pf tek in a while but I think i was using 1/4 pints.
And who said anything about getting 70g fresh from a 50-60g cake?
