LED light to start pinning
    #15171307 - 10/03/11 11:22 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys,

When should i use a blue LED light to jump start pinning in PF jars?  The grow kit i bought came with one, and I wanted to know when it's best to start using it...after complete colonization?  Thanks for any help!! :mushroom2:

Once the jars are 100% colonized, let them sit for another 7 days to consolidate.
Then birth them, dunk them in water for 24 hours.
Roll in verm, once the dunk is over.
& place in your SGFC.

Evaporating water from the surface of the substrate is the number 1 pinning trigger.

Light is a small factor in pinning.
I keep all of my colonizing jars, bulk, petris, etc. on a 12/12 schedule of indirect light.

www.mushroomvideos.com will help you greatly.
RR goes through the entire PF tek for free on it.

^^^^is right

during colonization you want 12/12 ambient 6500k light. during fruiting you want as much 6500k as you can possible shoot at your FCs without overheating them.

check out "Let there be light!" for a good write-up

Thank you.  I know this is kinda going to a PF tek discussion, but shouldn't i wait to birth until i see pinning?  And whats the best method to dunk, just so i can decide.  Dunking them for 24 hrs, single at a time seems kinda time consuming.  Do you guys strongly suggest dunking?  I understand that to induce pinning, removing moisture is key. that would be where the rolling in verm after dunking comes in?  i'm starting to understand, tell me if i got it confused.  thanks guys i really appreciate your help

Peace.

I'm sorry dude I might be from a different country or something or maybe im just retarted, but im not sure what ambient 6500k light is.  i havent had my jars in sunlight, possibly just indirect closet light, which is just a fluorescent bulb.  i have two lights that i got with a kit, one is a little LED light that i think they said induces fruiting, and just a touch light i'm not sure what type or anything.  thanks

its the color temperature in kelvins. the higher the number, the cooler the color range (blues), the lower the number the warmer the color range(reds). its just a daylight compact fluorescent. if you look on a daylight bulb package, it should say it has a color range of 6500k. this is the color range that mushrooms utilize best. I have used kits before with the touch leds, its just a pain to replace the rechargeable batteries daily. you can get led light strips too, but using a single compact-fluoro in the light socket with your FC up on a higher shelf near the light can produce good results. Like I said, during fruiting you want as much 6500k light as possible at all levels of the mushroom canopy. small LEDs around the tub would supplement one in the socket nicely, since you already have them. In the future, I recommend considering one of those shop-lights with a metal reflecting shield, with the highest lumens 6500k bulb you can get.

also, during colonization you just want the bulb in the socket on. then during fruiting you add the supplemental lights.

Thanks a lot man, answered my question.  But would you just wait for the jars to colonize and then dunk, or wait for pinning and then just birth the cakes?  You would suggest using both the blue LED light, and the touch light in the fruiting process?  After complete colonization, birth cakes, then use lights, or dunk cakes, and then use lights??  Sorry for this...but you guys are being really helpful.

Heres an idea...would it be stupid to possibly use the fluorescent, and then say, at night, use the blue LED or touchlight ?  would you guys suggest 12/12 during colonization?  what about during fruiting?

you want 12/12 light cycle during all stages. you just want more lumens during fruiting.

You can pick up a 6500K light bulb for a desk lamp @ any hardware store or mega-store.

Take the cakes outta the jar (birthing) rinse under cold water.
Dunk all together in a bowl (make sure all are 100% submerged).
Do that for 24 hours then put into your SGFC after the roll in verm.
The verm helps w/ the evaporation of moisture on the surface of your cakes.
Therefore, it helps w/ pinning.
