this newbie could use some imput on an idea,,
    #15163138 - 10/01/11 03:58 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey everyone
so I have 16 full pt jars cooking right now and I was considering fruiting some and turning some into spawn and making a mini mono shotgun hybrid.
the cakes are the BRF PF cakes...
so I guess what I'm wondering is if I should use a different substrate mix, I had planned on using Damon's elementary coir tek but that works best with WBS spawn right?
Can this mix still be used with the BRF cakes?
If it makes any difference I have an 8qt pressure cooker
and the totes I planned on using are two 25qt sterilite tubs

Any links or advice or input would be awesome!

Here's pretty much where I'm at so I've got a few weeks to iron out a plan.

im going to do the same thing as you but just spawn to 100% coco coir

i feel like this is an easy way to practice for spawning to bulk, plus coir is usually pre sterilized

(btw im subbed to your youtube channel lolol)

no not really, im just going to kinda wing it

i added gypsum with my cakes from the begining, i think that that is sufficient but it wouldn't hurt, id say use lime instead of gypsum if your going to add more when you mix your sub, just because lime brings your ph up really quickly for a shorter time when gypsum isn't as powerful

im going to spawn to 100% coir like i said and then case it with 50/50 verm/peatmoss once it goes in the FC

I figured it would be good for my first bulk practice

go for it, if you stick with a specific tek and do it to the letter then your most likely going to have success

very true. thats kinda why im not following a specific tek

you can make a Poor Mans Mycelium Syringe once you've got full jars too, then use that to noc up some jars of grain

Actually I still have 2cc of PE and Cam's respectively
So tomorrow I'm going out to get some organic honey to make a LC.
I figure that should do me for a while untill i can make a super sterile environment for doing that type of thing.

I would mix some verm in the coir, you're going to get much bigger flushes and fruits that way due to the moisture content being a lot better. Just mix it in a huge bucket and pasturize it with boiling water like in the various coir preparation teks around here. Not very difficult, and will be worth the results!

I have heard that using a cheese grater to grind brf cakes into finer bits is better than crumbling.  I have never personally tried this but I like the sound of it.  Can anyone confirm deny?

Using a cheese grater is the best way to spawn brf cakes. The smaller you can get the brf the better.

i also spawn to coco coir, with just a bit of used coffee grounds and a bit of verm.. idk if that is a specific tech or not but seems to work well.

So I guess cheese grater would be best?

If your going to go out and get a cheese grater, id get a zester instead, its like a cheese grater, but finer, for getting the zest of citrus.

I had a similar idea, but I  wanted to try using an entire jar of honey LC to spawn the 50/50 coir mix from Damion. thoughts?

See I had that idea too (on another post that I just deleted) most of the responses pointed to fail
due to the myc inside the LC not being able to colonize fast enough in the CCV substrate and it being more prone to infection.
All that aside, I hear it has been done from my additional research but the results weren't completely favorable..
I mean the only thing you have to lose is time and a jar of LC,
if i were you I'd use a strong amount of your LC into like 4 or 6 jars so they'll colonize much faster and stronger.

Good advice thanks. Contamination due to growth speed is a problem others have mentioned. I probably will use more LC but this is just an experiment, trying to be impatient and skip the jar stage.

Never heard that before. Some coir is treated with trich. ALWAYS pasteurize a bulk substrate, would be a waste not to.

Quote:

id say use lime instead of gypsum

Gypsum (CaSO4) Is like mushroom vitamins. Its not used to alter the PH so much as to give the mushrooms a nutrient boost as well as help control the moisture content.

from RR:
Quote:

In fact, there's very little use for lime in this hobby.  Cubes don't require a casing layer, and that's about the only thing you'd use lime for other than pasteurizing straw.  For that, use hydrated lime.
