The "Unwritten Rule" (Throwing trash on the floor)
#15168874 - 10/02/11 08:14 PM (12 years, 3 months ago) |
|
|
Growing up going to the movies with my dad was an enjoyable experience. It was enhanced by the magical fact that it was the only place you could simply throw your trash on the floor when you were finished with the snacks you smuggled inside
22 years later, and suddenly my fiance drops a bomb shell on me! Its wrong to throw your trash on the floor! In fact its even frowned upon by movie theaters with most commercials before the picture saying "Please throw your trash away in the acceptable areas".
This is a fucking outrage. A blatant disregard by both my fiance, and the movie establishments on "The Unwritten Rule". One way or another im going to throw my fucking trash on the ground . I just got back from watching 50/50 (which was pretty good by the way ) and when I pay $18 for a fucking matinee (2 people)....you bet your ASS your going to be picking up my fucking garbage.
Anyone else feel like this? Was a raised incorrectly? Was such a norm non existent except in the eyes of my backward ass family?
Tell me im wrong!

I guess I never experienced that. I was raised pretty damn christian, so everything was very tidy, and I was supposed to treat others as I wished to be treated.
With that said, I once worked at a movie theater, and one of the worst tasks was picking up others trash, specially foodstuffs.

No no no....throwing your trash anywhere else is barbaric. Its horrible for the environment and rude for wherever you are (except the movies!). Thats what made the movie theater so special. Just throw it on the ground!

no I got minimum. which sucked. But I mainly made pizza. But, I did not work at a regular movie theater you see. At this place, you could go in, Order a pizza, get a pitcher of beer, and bring it in with you at a table inside the theater. So there ended up being a lot of garbage.
If people made less of a mess, the people who's job it would be to clean it up could learn a more worthwhile skill that would benefit themselves and others.

But not everyone in society wants better skills. Some people need something as trivial as picking up garbage. THINK ABOUT IT! Throwing trash on the floor creates jobs, stimulates our economy, and supports our future!
This isnt about movie theaters anymore, this is about America

You've got it all backwards, brah.
There IS an unwritten rule about throwing trash on the ground, but it states that anyone who litters in any place is a lazy pig that doesn't deserve to share the same public space as respectable people.

Quit harping on this guy. It is normal to throw garbage on the floor when you go to the movies. It even helps employ people- so the next time you democrats try to spend 400 billion to spur jobs in the economy, just remember it is actually as easy as littering...

I'll throw away the drinks but not the wrappers! No way those people need to stay bizzy working! If i pay $10 I'm going to throw that candy I payed 6 bucks for on the ground. They over price things, I'm going to enjoy myself. That includes defecating on the seat next to mine.
I don't even waste the ice, with no refills you bet I'm going to chomp down on it. Pfft a small cost 2$ I might as well eat the cup as well.
(half is sarcasim but the rest is true!) op nothing wrong with it.

Disrespectful yes, but the amount of money they make from ONE person to see a 1:30min -2hr movie is disrespectful.

Obviously its a 'cultural thing'. Which isnt something to be proud of imo. People like Ethno are the reason religious doctrines have some use, since direct perception of harmony and balance just go over their heads and they need to be told wrong from right. This has nothing to do with the movie theater having to pick up his trash, they get payed for it after all, but the act of littering is counter-harmonious to begin with, even if you do it in the middle of nowhere where no one will ever find the trash.

I used to think like that until I realized it is pretty disrespectful to whoever has to clean that shit up.
I could careless either way. I started putting myself in other peoples shoes when I realized I was a dick to pretty much everyone I didn't know and now I like to give a certain amount of respect out and expect a certain amount of respect back.
You could also look at it as job security for whoever has to clean up after you I guess.....

Yes, but I would argue that the people that clean it up aren't the ones that determine the price so leaving trash for that reason is not effective.

I used to throw trash on the floor everywhere, using the justification "If there wasn't a mess, the janitor would lose his job" or something of that juvenile nature. Now I do it extremely extremely rarely. ...its usually at peoples' houses who I dont know when i'm really wasted.

Haha. I hear you man. We've all done it. This actually made me laugh out loud because I totally used to love leaving all of my trash on the floor in the movie theater...spill the rest of the popcorn all over and everything. But I was a little bastard. I wouldn't do that now. I won't even litter a cigarette butt. Littering really bugs me, anywhere.

Not picking on anyone here, but don't throw trash down. Sure, the movies are expensive as fuck, let alone the food/drinks, but no one is making you go there.
Maybe throwing trash down does make mare jobs, but if people didn't, maybe it could make it cheaper. I know it won't, but it comes from the same state of mind.

yeah man... the kids who work at the theaters here get paid $6.25, which is lower than the minimum. i'm pretty sure all the money that's made going to the theater, goes to the people making the movie. every theater that i go to is complete crap and some smell like piss. but after paying that price to watch a damn movie, i sat my ass down like a boss.... and threw away my trash.
plus do you really think all those kids really care to pick up your trash? i bet they just leave it for the next people to come and step in it. lazy lil terds.

How about stop being a filthy, lazy fat fucking pig and clean up your damn mess. Having that kind of habit in the theater can be easily carried over everywhere else your dirty ass goes.
Pretty soon you're gonna be saying it's ok to litter on the beach because there's already people that pick up the trash.

Yes, but I would argue that the people that clean it up aren't the ones that determine the price so leaving trash for that reason is not effective.
That is a good point, I need to reflect on that.

I throw out my trash at the movies, but if there's too much stuff to carry I don't get hung up on leaving something behind. Likewise if I have a free hand I'll sometimes throw out something someone else has left behind. I guess I take the "Leave a penny, take a penny" mentality.
The prices for food/candy/drinks at movie theaters are definitely outrageous, though, to the point where I can understand why some folks might think twice about digging around under the seat in front of them for garbage.

Actually, the more time (and therefore money) that must be spent picking up after folks who leave their trash behind, the more the theater will have to charge for food/candy/drinks. It's self-defeating to leave behind trash as a protest on the price, if you think about it.

My parents raised me to be considerate of others and try to make their life a little easier or better if possible. So no, I do not throw my trash on the floor at the movie theater, I toss it in the trash can on the way out.

No one's ever brought up ths golden rule to me. What else are the movie theatre workers going to do if you clean up for them? It's not like working at a movie theatre is labor intensive work, the floor cleaning is the worst part...

You must not realize how the movie theater business works.
Quote:
For instance, 2 movie theatre managers told me that for Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, the studio took 100% of the box office take for the first week of release.
But anyways, the only trash I leave on the floor are the beer cans or bottles. Kind of awkward to walk out of the theater and dump a bunch of empties in the trash. Although almost as bad is knocking the bottles over when you leave and hearing them bounce down a couple rows, "that sounds like daddy's garage" said the kid after a movie.

Eh not necessarily. This job has been around since movie theaters have been around (cleanup crew).
Kind of like how Bussers are around in restaurants. Unless you like taking your own plates glasses and other utensils back to the restaurant's dish room yourself... Cleaning up after yourself in theatres is just a request, it's not a rule.

Hey pris, weird question. This website was just displayed Backwards for a second (when I loaded this page). Any idea why? Text and everything, flipflopped.
And sealed concrete floors are easy to clean, leaving some trash on it won't ruin it, it gets cleaned right away, by the cleaning crew, who doesn't really do much except clean.

I'm starting to find it hilarious how you always try to inspire negative feedback.
I guess you can be wrong and right depending on the view point but I'd have to go with the fact that its a pretty thing to do. I mean all you do is make some random fuck stay there and deal with your shit. Sure you've paid for that but I bet my ASS that you would sing a different song if you were the kid who is being paid to clean the theatre.
And besides is it really that difficult to throw your trash in the bin If you don't like what they charge then stay home, download torrents and take a shit and cum all over your floor
But then again I never ever go to theatres so feel free to ignore my opinion.

Meh. I wouldn't go so far as actually throwing trash on the floor but I usually do just leave the empty thing of popcorn and my drink on the seat. Lazyness + not being a complete douche = Win
Though it does irritate me somewhat whenever I hear people say things like "its not the janitors job to clean up after you". Yes it is. Cleaning shit up is the sole purpose of having a janitor.
-------------------- "I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

Yeah it isn't like we're spilling the food out on the floor. At the end of movies, the empty stuff just stays where it was. Never really thought of it as rude, just how it was supposed to be, like leaving your dishes at the table at a restaurant.

I dont go out to a restaurant to bus my own plates, pfft.

hmm... i tend to actually stack up my dishes and put the remaining food on one plate at the top when finished eating at a restaurant. then put all the dishes at the end of the table together so it's easier to pick up. does anyone else do this?
i don't know. i guess it's weird.

but since everyone else seems to think it's the same. i was just wondering...
