Shotgun + pf cakes. Need advice people
    #15167532 - 10/02/11 03:04 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hello there, mycoFriends.

I am about to grow some cubes (mckennaii and cambodians) using shotgun terrarium and BRF cakes. With a size of my terrarium I can fit in about 20 cakes with 2 cm of space between them. so two questions I want to ask:
1. I have read somewhere that putting cakes close together creates a nice micro-climate for shrooms. is it true? will they be alright so close together?
2. Will perlite provide enough humidity for 20 cakes? should I put them on wire mesh to increase surface area of perlite?

let me know what do you think.
Thanks!

That's not enough room between the cakes.

The more cakes you have in your SGFC the better the micro-climate inside will be, yes.
But you have to have enough room for our little friends to grow.

Your cakes shouldn't be on the perlite.
Most users you jar lids or tin foil to keep them off the perlite.
You can use a wire rack to hold them off the perlite, if you want.
The wire rack will cause 360 degree fruiting.

TranscendingLife is correct, that is way to close together. They should be no closer to each other than two inchs.

You can also stack cakes if you really need to conserve space, but if I were you I would just buy another container, also be aware that aluminum can be consumed by some mushrooms.
