spores in mail

What can happen to a spore syringe in the mail to make it useless?? I recently had 2 spore syringes come in the mail and I didn't get any growth at all after inoc..I didn't get any contams which is good but no growth at all. I read about possibly some mail facilities irradiating mail?? sounds like conspiracy theory to me but what do you guys think?

X-rays can destroy spores but why would the postal service do this, especially if some people still send film through the mail? My best guess is that you got a bad syringe, did you only order one? Also freezing can damage spores as well as high temperatures and low pressures. I'd contact the seller and state that you didn't see any nice spore specimens under the microscope, and request a replacement.

Freezing and low pressure isn't going to hurt spores, nor is heat at less than pasteurization temps. RR

Rapid freezing and low pressure can lyse spores, I was thinking more like jet liner temps at 30K feet, but either way, would you predict a bad syringe?

maybe you forgot to shake up the syringes? spores tend to clump together.
or, maybe your unlucky?
The mail isnt your problem. Its your vendor, your methodology, lack of patience, or sheer lack of luck.
if its been 3 weeks, time to try again!

My first time ordering and growing, I ordered from an outside vendor, before I found this place...and I only had one jar do anything at all..and that was on the second try..1 out of 6 showed growth a month later

It's been 3 weeks on first syringe..and 1 week on 2nd I've got some PF Tek cakes I made myself and inoc. with 2nd syringe also but this is only the 3rd night. I've got them in a dark place kept at a constant 78 deg and dark
I used spore store and I've been reading bad things about them this morning since I've been checking them out..I'm going to get some from one of the sponsors I may try spore works or Ralphster..I got 2 syringes from spore store when I did my first go round with growing and both of them were good and both came from spore store.. That was also my first order from them and I ordered both at same time..I've also moved to a coastal area but that shouldn't have anything to do with it

how long did you wait after you pressure cooked the jars? because if your substrate was still hot when you inoculated, your spores arent going to survive.
and did you buy from a shroomery vendor? because if not theirs a chance your just getting fucked.

I waited plenty of time I sterilized at around 7pm and didn't inoc until about 4 the next afternoon. and the other inoc was in a pre purchased rye grain bag..
I'm gonna post pics but now 3 weeks later I've got growth in 1 rye grain bag and it looks OK but have you ever known spores to take that long for mycelium to start growing..las time it was a week and I had noticeable growth

ONLY USE A SHROOMERY VENDOR!! Buy your syringe from ralphstersspores.com and write on the paper order you send in to give you a free syringe for being a member of shroomery.

Very good point..I've heard several different number regarding shelf life of spores. To the previous question of whether or not I shook up the syringe, yes I did. Thanks to RR Vids I did remember to shake them up..

Does that usually speak to the quality of spores or perhaps the substrate?

Did you pack your jars or leave the sub loose??
Did you inoculate towards the glass? or towards the inside of the sub??

I've had spores last in print form for many years and they were still viable, syringes may not last more than a couple of years, I have one that is two years old in my kitchen, I should see if it is still good.
