A lesson learned the hard way.. (Prob not what you'd expect)

I just went to check on some LC's and found a sticky mess. A jar of Panamanian was cracked 360 degrees around the base of the jar. To make matters worse, in the liquid that still remained in the jar I can see the mycelia was starting to gather. No chance of saving it now, I fear.
I don't know when or how it cracked but the lesson has been learned: Check my damn jars carefully before use.

A few causes of cracked jars:
1. Glass sitting against the bottom of the pot that you boil in. 2. Lifting the weight on the PC to relieve the pressure. 3. Defects in the glass.
I discovered 1 and 2 first hand. I got impatient with the PC and figured that if I just relieved the pressure then I could hurry the process and get the jars cooling. The results were not what I had anticipated.

i found that when doing liquid cultures it helps having the water level at or near the level of the water in the jars.

This is a bit of a mystery to me. I kept the jars off the bottom under two layers of lids and I let it depressurize normally. Perhaps a problem with the glass, but I am thinking I'll never know. Still disapointed about loosing my LC though.

Oh, then again, maybe I spoke to soon. I don't think my water was that high. I will try this on the next batch.
Thanks guys!

Store bought jars with food in them are often weak as they only are supposed to withstand one heating cycle, the original sterilzation of them. Some more expensive brands come in better jars. Or just examine them to see how thick the are, also it should be smooth curves at the bottom so if it expands and contracts there is not much stress.

was your jar sealed air-tight? or does it have an 'air-port'? the pressure generated by the water in the jar can easily break the jar if the gas can't escape.
also, dumping room-temperature jars into boiling water will sometimes crack them.
as someone mentioned, the jars must not be directly on the pc.
i used to crack some of my jars, at the base as you pointed out, until i realized the above.

i've had about 4 jars do this. the last one was a grain jar, after inoculating with lc i shook jar and all grain dumped into my lap.. i started laughing hysterically..it was just a ridiculous pile of grain on my lap. fill pc with appropriate amount of water as stated by someone a couple posts up.. i have to use level 7 out of 10 on my stove burner as to not heat too quick.. and obv let it cool on its own without forcing it.
