Why two tubs for an incubator?
    #15163510 - 10/01/11 05:33 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

The most common incubator setup is the tub in tub. Why not just submerge spawn jars halfway in water, then heat the water with an aquarium heater?

The incubator allows you to hit the 70 - 80 F zone. Tub in Tub is what it is called. I used to doubt this method, but I recently purchased better aquarium heaters and a humidor/temperature combo to monitor it.

Although you could do your idea, it is not optimal because it is easier to control the temperature in a plastic container than in things submerged in water.

What you guys fail to understand is that not everyone on this earth lives in room temperature. Incubators are helpful if done correctly. They only become a problem if the user overheats his jars.

The 2 tubs act as a buffer to the heat flucuations. Aquarium heaters turn on and off with a thermostat. If your jar was near the heating end it could overheat if touching the heater. It also means the heat cannot evenly heat all the water as the jars are like baffles stopping heat & water flowing about. It also contams more, you get moisture on your filters and I have seen lids rust where they were cut.

My bedroom was 59F last time I checked. This "room temp" stuff drives me mad, is it so hard to quote the range? its almost like people asking how much water to put in jars "as much as you drink when thirsty". People are different, they drink different amounts and are comfortable at different temperatures.
