OK Guys, I have been reading here for few months, thanks for all the info.
My Girls Cat Cassidy has got some spores and started the PF-Tek for simple minds.
She pressure cooked them for an hour an carefully innoculated 8 1/2 pint jars with B+ and Treasure Coast.
The Cat has a large container in the closet with a submersible heater and keep the inner container about 79.8 degrees with 95% humidity.
Cassidy used various lids to test the best method and hopes to case some as well.
This is the fourth day and the cat thinks he sees some mycelia growth but is not sure. It mostly looks grey although she has spotted a few whiter areas.
Does this sound about right?
My girlfriends pussy is special to me and I'd like to put it at ease.

If the gray is more like a transparent instead of the actual color, then your pussy is doing fine. In about a day or two the transparent should turn into a white. You temp might be a little low at 79.8 and for this reason it is still transparent. My pussy keeps her jars at 82 and by the fourth day is very white. Other cats will tell your pussy to keep the temp at 85, but my puss keeps it at 82, because the myc let off heat as they colonize. If your cat has any questions it can PM me

Yea, my iguana got freaked out when he saw those first puffy gray clouds, I assure you that if they are a transparent white more than a "gray", the little pussy is doing fine. I'd raise the temps as well. Looking good

My g/fs pussys mycelium looked like that 2 weeks ago (top left hand SWEET)
Now 85-90% colonised no contams and lookin ok. Good luck.

Actually when I first innoculated them I thought there was too much water in some of them. When the drop of "Spore Juice" got to the bottom of the jar it seemed to mix with some water on some of the Jars.
Does that mean my girlfriend pussy is fucked, so to speak?
How would one avoid this.
I did eight jars with various lids and foil tops to see which I preffered. I followed the PF Tek for Simple Minds pretty much to a T.
Damn and I was feeling good at work thinking it was working.
Time will tell I suppose.
Vermeculite is gray so I thought perhaps I was seeing it incrrectly.
There is definately some white growth in a few of my B+ Jars.
I plan on doing more Monday and every Monday all summer.
HOW CAN I AVOID THIS PROBLEM IN THE PC?

Actually some have tape, some have foil, some have tape and foil and one has only the tape with holes in it after I shot them up.
So hopefully with patience I will find the best way.
In the mean time, Cassidy the Cat wants to trip alot this summer so I'd like to get this first batch going strong.

I recommend not putting the holes in the jar till after you've sterilized not only does this guarantee no water gets in but it will vacuum seal your substrate so it can actually stay good for years before innoculating...I just swabbed the nail I used to poke the holes with rubbing alcohol and wiped down the lids with alcohol before doing this...I've only lost 1 jar outta 12 so far with this...btw I also just used alcohol for the syringe...no flame sterilization...they say too...but so far I've been fine with just rubbing alcohol. /me shrugs

ya looks like those jars are wet..the only proble with that is it raises the chances for contamination....raise the temps and get them going if the mycelium colonizes quickly then the contaminate is harder to take over...if im wrong someone correct me...........Peaces

How did the jars get wet in the first place?
On four of then I covered the Holes with industrial strength tape.
On the other four I put tin foil lids over the top twice.
I used an inch of water in the canner.
Does the water condense in the Jars or flow under the lids or tin foil or both?
Steamed at 15 PSI for an hour.
Could it be I used too much "spore juice" in the innoc?
Oh well they all look pretty good today, no signs of contams thus far.
I am starting another batch today and will be more careful.

I'm willing to bet the jars are overcooked. BRF does not need to cook at 15 psi for a hour. Next time try for fun 10 psi for 45 min and see what happens. You may have carmalized (sp) some of the BRF. You'll know if the color change was big in the substrate if you over cooked it.
I cook at 10 psi for 45 min. Let them cool overnight, inject spores, when I see the myc start to grow I remove the tape and put a coffee filter over the top as a dust cover. Never taken longer then 21 days to colonize.

There seems to be some action here!
5 of 8 Jars have begun serious Mycelia growth.
Three look ready and have a few tiny white spots.
Nice Buds Shots BTW
Last Night I innoculated two Quart Jars of Rye for my second try.
New method every Monday is the plan.

all looks pretty good from here. the one on bottom left is waterlogged, and the bottom may never colonise, but if you can live with that....
now you wait ..... (the boring bit) ...... and get your fruiting chamber all ready and prepared for birthday in about a fortnight.

Well its 23 days after innoculation and I have some questions for you fine people.
Some of the Jars look good but some of the jars seem to have been waterlogged.
I dont think they will fully colonize. What should I do? I plan on casing them.
Pictures 1-10 are some shots of the Jars.
Picture 11 is a stewardess from US Airways
Picture 12 is Phil and Friends at New York's Beacon Theatre.
I had to do something waiting for these things to grow!

I don?t want to scare you, but some (actually most) of the jars appear to have bacterial contamination (judging by the form the mycelium grows).
Do they smell?

JB-I think next time you should montior the amount of water used. After twenty days those jars should have already produced something. An hour is a bit in the pressure cooker, usually 30-45min is enough. Make sure you put the foil under the lid and screw the lids on tight. As long as you don't try to cool off the jars to fast, then they will be alright. You either put to much water in while mixing the brf and verm. or water got in while PCing.

I'm not sure WTF all this has to do with my mycology experiment but....
Pass the Freedom Fries and the Freedom Toast and I'm in.
Back to the Subject:
My Jars were definately too wet and I have solved that problem using polyfilll and filters as well as lessening the time in the Pressure cooker. I did a batch of 12 today and had no water logging.
I am still waiting to see how much more they will colonize HOWEVER>>>>>
If they dont fully colonize will I still be able to case them?
My second batch which were started 9 days after this batch were transferred to straw today for spawning. I will case them in 12 days.
The SECOND batch was done in Grain and I also have a week old WBS Tek
going in the other room.
Practice makes perfect......I say
I see no sign of contams in any of them and there is no smell.
I'm a rookie but the seconce batch looks great so far.
25 Days till another Dead Concert so I am crossing my fingers!!!

Curious though, are you saying that I could fruit them conventionally in perlite with cakes or will that not work either unless fully colonized?
I'm in no hurry, I have been groing my own medicinal herbs for years so patience is my strong point!

UPDATE:
1 1/2 days flipped over. Slow growth on the BRF.
My WBS Tek is not showing any growth at all after 6 days, however.......I did innoculate them right down the middle as opposed to sides like PF Tek.
My Grain Experiment is in its second day of spawning in Straw. I am keeping a constant 82 Degree temperature with total darkness in a cabinet with a heating pad and a fish pump supplying some oxygen and air movement.
The crushed substrate seems to be growing a little and multiplying as the mycelium grows. All is well in Grain. BRF may be fucked and no signs of life in WBS.
I'll keep ya informed!

Out of the 7 Jars remaining only one is completely colonized. Two others are about 90% but still have spots which are most likely bacterial infected. After flipping my
Jars over it seem most of the water has gone down into the vermeculite.
Should I drain the water from the jars?
Several jars look great except a small corner. Couldnt I cut the corners off and use the remaining cake for spawning?
My second tek which was the 6T WBS tek is baffling me. Its been seven or eight days and still no sign of mycelic growth.
I bought those spores from Speaking Plants so I am not so sure thet were even viable. They are supposed to be Penis Envy.
Is it possible these are just slowing growing strains?
How long should I wait to growth or try again?
My latest Try is a mix of several sizes of BRF and Grain Jars. Thre days and all have shown signs of healthy growth after only a few days. My incubator holds 48 jars and is maintain a 82 or 83 temperature constantly.
My Second attempt is spawning nicely on some hay at 84 degrees in the dark
These were fast growing grain jars and really look good. There is mycelium spreading throughou the substrate and little "spikes" of white groth sticking up.
I am psyched. 10 days till fruiting.

ah... didn't want the thread to get TOO bogged down by traffic so... a fellow lizard told me that she once had to lop off a portion of a cake that wouldn't colonize, said it ended up fine, she also pointed out that as long as no uncolonized substrate was still open to air, the contams wouldn't have a potential stronghold. But she likes to play things by ear, so any wiser shroomers may want me to correct her, that's all i got hope it helped.
also, she says fruiting can be very fickle, so she doesn't like to guess how many more days till she trips till pins come up...

Could one of you experienced Shroomers weigh in here?
If tossed three out of eight jars which were very wet.
The others seem great except some small spots?
Any hope in spawning the good parts in straw on something?
